Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I'll use it mainly at home with a possibility of some small concerts further along the way, so I'm not overly concerned with loudness at the moment.
I'd have to sell some gear first, so it's not going to happen soon, but it's definitely a plan in like 2 months or so.
I've seen the bassist from The Shrine play a V4B through a Sunn 610 in a pretty big venue last year and he was pretty loud.

Hi guys. Does anyone here play through Ampeg 810? What tuning do you guys play in? I'm trying to get USA-made one through trade but I'm worried whether if the cab would fart out at low A. If it does, then I guess I gotta play in B...

Needs more amps.

So a friend of mine was at a chain thrift store this week and found a f*cking black line V4 for an absurdly low price.

Power cord was dangerously messed up so I went over this afternoon and we put a three prong cord on it. Fired up and passed signal for 5 minutes then popped the fuse. So I'm guessing it needs tubes and caps done. He's going to flip it as-is, but he'll still make a tidy profit on it. If anyone is interested let me know and I can pass on his contact info.

It's in fairly decent shape, tolex rips in a few spots, faceplate paint is wearing off, but other than that it's fairly clean. The pots were ever so slightly scratchy.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous. Oh well.

I've seen people who tune down to low A and low F# use them. Sounds fine.

A lot of people run around on talkbass thinking that for lower than E you need specialized cabs. But you really don't. They just are under the mistaken impression that the fundamental frequency contributes more to the sound than it really does.

I bought two Kappalite 3015 for my Acoustic 106 cab and on certain frequency, it gets really boomy due to standing frequency of the cab itself. Everytime it does that, I just lower the hell out of my Peavey Classic 400's low channel which is already cut and also run through High Pass Filter pedal set up at 40 Hz. I'm just too afraid to blow another speaker which I have in the past.

I also agree with the idea that fundamental frequency doesn't really matter that much, and honestly, I would prefer to be heard than "felt" in terms of my bass playing.

Well, the thing is, you can't just throw any driver into any cab and get good results. I'm not that familiar with the Acoustic 106 cab. Is it ported? You may have to adjust the ports, if so.

I use a 2000S cab with Faital 15PR400 drivers, which works well, at least down to low B.

Yeah I calculated everything with WinISD and the best ones were actually Deltalite II 2515, Kappalite 3015LF and Peavey BW. But when I went to Parts Express HQ for Midwest Audio Fest, they ran out of Deltalite so it was like the last minute decision. Turned out, it's actually not that bad. But of course, I gotta compare it to Ampeg 810 that I'm trading on this weekend.

I play one for B standard tuning with lots of low end. I've never heard an Ampeg 810 that was in working order fart out on any note honestly. Every time someone I know has gone on about how their 810 sounded bad, was quiet or couldn't take low frequencies it turned out it had at least one bad speaker. Which, given how they're wired, really screws up the whole cab.
