Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'll build it and if it comes out good, let's talk. Any input on the color theme? I have a box in mind, but knobs.

Well, today is off to a pretty weak start, the mesa had a lightening bolt type electrical event inside the head earlier, i changed the fuse, fired it up again, and a less dramatic surge happened and the fuse blew again. Thank goodness, there is a guy down the street from me that specializes in tube heads, although this was the same guy who didn't want to do a checkup on it, because he said to keep rocking it until there is a real problem.

I found a guy locally who has a Peavey Vulcan and Musician 400 and he wants to sell them but says they are guitar amps.
I thought a lot of these were "instrument" amplifiers and works fine for bass w/ an appropriate cab?

He won't split them up (includes a Pvy 412) and he says the Vulcan is in rough shape but he's in a hurry to sell. 45 minute drive 1 way, and he doesn't have a phone/camera to send a picture.

Going to try out for a band tonight of doom/stoner hotshots, they said they sounded 'Sleep-esque'. If I'm hired I guess I'll join these stimulating conversations. :eyebrow:

Tried out last week, did ok picking up what little material they had, but liked the dudes and music. Second guessing myself this week. Today got the reply 'we're still trying dudes out' schtick, also today they reposted their ad on craigslist.....aw gimme a f******k-ing break.

Holy balls Earth was freaking incredible last night. Saw them last year in a crowded small club and it was great. Last night they were at a theater with a HUGE PA. Along with Dylan and Adrienne was a 2nd guitarist that also played Moog Taurus pedals pretty much the entire time. Those low-end drones - amped and direct out to the PA with stacks of massive subs were huge and all-encompassing. It was LOUD and completely engrossing. One of the best shows I've seen in years.

Nearly everyone I know flaked out after Boris cancelled, which was disappointing, but it made for an early night - was in bed by 11:00 - which I'm grateful for today.

Got this pic of Earth (Dylan, really) when they played here a coupla weeks ago:

Boris was great, but Earth was a near religious experience for me. To be fair, most Earth albums are religious experiences for me.

JoeVictim, if you're moving away from your current rig because it's not loud enough then I'm not sure that the Alphabass would be loud enough either. I could be wrong - (I often am). But I'd shoot for 300W if going all-tube.
I could maybe do Catapult with a V4B. And I've only once turned up my D-180 all the way, and that was outside. But I don't play clean at all.

Your D-180? It's probably had a problem for a while then. Mine lasted a year after falling off the cab and shaking loose the bias connection for one half of the output section.

Odd. No obvious bad signs at the audition?

it seemed like the od wasn't as grindy like normal and the tone was a little more deep and undefined than usual, not sure if it seemed quieter, because i may have just gotten used to how loud it was, i'm hoping greg's amp repair can fix it (he used to play guitar for dokken) cause joshua tree music closed and i'm not the world's biggest fan of mesa boogie hollywood
