Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Looking for options on a thick, gnarly tone from my guitar. Thinking maybe fuzz? Doesn't have to be fuzz though. What would be some options to start on? Thinking boutique, but not necessarily. I want a tight bottom, and mids that cut through without overbearing highs. Liked the Supercollider I had briefly, and my tone goals have matured (i.e. I know what works better in the mix) so it's on top. I also have a Pharaoh Supreme, but am thinking I want higher gain for guitar. Suggestions?

Seem to like distortion-y fuzz, like the FatMetal. Keep trying to tweak the Pickle for guitar, but can't quite get it right. Think I might prefer it for bass, but am also open to suggestions for that.

For tone reference, I'm digging High On Fire type tones in general lately. Which is why I think maybe Pharaoh. (Yes, I know BAT now has a Matt Pike signature, but don't want to be pigeon-holed into a specific tone necessarily, just a ballpark idea.)

Any specific reason why? I don't hear anywhere near as much praise for those, and am not as familiar with them. Are they also muff clones?

when i think high on fire I'm thinking something more gainy which, if i remember correctly, is what the lstr is. the pharaoh was more of a low gain fuzz, kind of a brown blown out sound with a bloated bottom end. lstr is tighter liw end and not as boxy sounding in the mids. but it's been a while since i heard both.

Yeah, I'm running an old Peavey Supreme. Love it and all, but I don't think this SS distortion would be quite what I'm looking for.

I struggle to lift my cl400 on top of the dually stack and I am not weak by any means. My back is a little screwy though.

One cab, stairs and general movement are no problem, but lifting it shoulder height hurts my back a bit every time. As long as I get a hand with that everything's all good. I can do it, I just have to see the chiro the next day.

The '66 is taller than a single Dually, a stack of Duallies would be taller still.

I've also considered the Boneshaker, as it's two of my favorite effects makers' collaboration. Any input on that for guitar? Buddy of mine had one for a while, but couldn't quite dial it in. I've recently put rounds on my guitar and it has caused me to have a distortion revelation with my board. Though I'm not particularly interested in the BAT Revelation.

The '66 is taller than a single Dually, a stack of Duallies would be taller still.

I stack them on their sides. It would be the same height as a '66, 48".

I would not do a vertical stack unless my amp was on the floor or I was using a micro amp.

I have thought of the Black Sheep as well. With the exception of the LSTR (don't really know why), I could say that about many of BAT's pedals...

Its pretty sloppy. But I kind of tried to show off maybe a couple different style riffs. They start with the clean tone which is my Charvel DS-2 with Seymour Duncan JB pickups through the clean channel of my Mesa Rectoverb 25 combo. Then kick on the Quantum Mystic on a somewhat mid focused tone, played on the bridge pickup. Then a little more bass heavy/gainy riff on the bridge pickup, a mid focused tremelo picked riff and a sloppy rendition of no quarter fairly mid focused on the pedal and played on the neck pickup. I also show off the touch sensitivity by playing really lightly towards the end. Its way more versatile than i showed off here. It can do quite a bit.

I used to have a 3leaf audio GR2, I've gotten rid of it so I can't demo it, but it sounds good. Especially if you dial back the bass a bit to keep from blowing out the low end through the envelope. the QM has alot of bass on tap. Though I preferred the cthulu or rat through the envelope. I could put it in front of my wah to kind of simulate it through the envelope.

It's all good, you've done plenty. Just a question I always have about dirt. I have no need for filter on my guitar rig, and barely any on my bass, but after dirt, it is by far my favorite effect. Love the two together.

I have the amps gain channel for tight high gain guitar stuff, then the QM for more mid gain burl, then I have a 3 knob cthulu for full out fuzzy hate. Ditto. I don't actually play guitar in a group. Started as a way for me to write riffs to accompany my bass stuff. Hence the (initially) affordable gear. Mid-grade Ibby 7 string, Peavey Supreme and matching head, and a bunch of DOD. Now, I'm slowly getting into higher end and boutique dirt on guitar as well. Got a Rivera Shaman for my tight, crunchy metal sounds. Tried an Amptweaker TightMetal to try out as well, but just didn't get the tone I was after. Now, I'm still working in that doomy distortion/fuzz sound. The FatMetal seems to work well so far, but I feel like something else will work better. Hence the fuzz and heavy distortion quest I'm currently on.

Spent time this morning A/Bing my Pharaoh Supreme and FatMetal. I'm definitely after a tighter distortion instead of a looser fuzz. The fuzz on the Pharaoh just never quite got what I was hoping for.

Hope this makes sense. I'm terrible at describing tones I want, but once I hear them, I know.

Playing a bunch of motown covers tonight with my current psychrock band...can't help but notice there are times I ask myself what I'm doing with my life - those times are never when I'm being enveloped by an immense riff. Coincidence?

They are supposedly clones of Marshall Majors. I'm thinking maybe snag it and then slowly have it reworked over time to have a plexi front end and then a big ol' power section. Think it might be a nice experimental platform. Not much info on these out there. He says $600 firm but it's missing two tubes so idk, maybe I could work him down a bit.


Here's an old ebay listing with better pics of the internal setup. Not the prettiest, but serviceable, and a whole lot of real estate to work in for more circuitry.
