I have a busted HM2, it was my very first pedal when I was a 13 year old kid, and I wish it worked or I had a new one but I refuse to pay the price.

So yes, it's worth it ebcause I can't afford it and want to live vicariously through you.

Lol. For that price I could get a custom amplifier built exactly to my needs (by my choice of several different custom amp builders), entirely tailored to my preferred sounds... and then I could have it built over fifty times, at lowest estimate.

Also unlike Dumbles, the circuits of mine wouldn't be covered in goop and so it could be repaired locally.

If you're willing to spend that much on amp.... why not just have something custom built specifically for you?

Asked the dude from Khemmis what he plays thru; his reply-" Dunable Thunderclapper -> Black Arts Toneworks Revelation Superbass-> BAT Pharaoh -> Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B -> Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster -> Verellen Meatsmoke -> Atlas 4x12 and 2x15 cabinets."

Not even sure what half that stuff is but sounds great.

Hadn't heard of Dunable before, that Thunderclapper is a looker. Set neck + thunderbird style pups is A1 too.

Listening more closely to my set-up, I think the distortion I mentioned early is starting with the Sorado not the speaker in the SVT-15E. This is with the volume on anywhere above 4. I've been playing with the EQ with the bass between 4 and 6 and the treble between 2 and 3 (I'm leaving both hi and lo boost switches off). Above 4 on the volume, the low end starts to compress with some distortion and the midrange, especially the upper mids, start to come to the fore.

I really like how the amp sounds on volume 3 and the bass on 5/6, treble on 3. It's warm and clear with a slight chime on the top end with a really great dimension and enough bottom. Once I start getting above that on the volume, I'm not sure how I feel about the compression I'm getting. It sounds nice in an abstract way, and I think would be useful in band context with a drummer, but that's not my sitch. I was expecting the Sunn to stay cleaner with the volume up. Of course, the little guy is only 60-70 watts so I might be expecting too much from it in that regard.

Seems like I either need:

1) a different tube amp with a bigger power section and a voicing that's designed to stay relatively clean.

2) more cab. I've got it on a 1x15 with pretty good sensitivity, but with such a small power section, seems like there's only so much I can expect.

3) to coax a bit more headroom out of it with a different preamp tube? It's got one 6AN8A in it. I'm new to tube amps and I don't have any experience with preamp tubes outside the 12AX7/AU7 family. I'm not sure how much difference this would make.

Any thoughts from those more familiar with tube amps in general or the little Sunns in particular are welcome. In general, I'm just going to keep experimenting to see if I can find that full-range tone I need from this set-up.

More cab.

The old Sunns are rated at <1% THD, so they're loud for their rating. However, they also use the Fender tone stack, so bass and treble are boost only, while mids ("contour") are cut only.

Personally I get my dirt from my amp, so distortion is fine.

Levi in SubRosa uses a Dunable Thunderclapper as well.

The Sorado like the 200s just has bass/treble no mids. Huh, I'm surprised to hear that it's a Fender tone stack. It doesn't behave exactly like one, but now that you mention it, it does make sense. Perhaps it's modified a bit from the traditional Fender tone stack? Either way, looks like it'll take some more futzing around with.

And I think you're right: I'm gonna need more cab if I want to make the Sorado work. Would love for a one cab solution that can fit in a trunk of a taxi, but that might not be in my budget.

Does it have a knob labeled "contour"? If so, that's the mid knob.

Otherwise yeah, bass and treble controls are "flat-ish" at like 2.

Probably a bit different from the regular Fender circuit, but it is basically that type, not the James or Baxandall type.

I mean, there's a always a Dually. But pricey.

No contour knob. I think thats only on the larger sunn bass amps of the time like the 2000s. Would love a dually but i think thats outta budget for me. Might just grab another svt-15e if i can find one around what i got mine for ($225). Gonna have to save up for some wheels eventually. Nyc has spoiled me with its comprehensive public transit.

Hey speaking of Peavey 215 I have a VB tour 215. It's a monster cab in good condition. I can't find any selling used anywhere to just get an idea what to sell it for. I'm getting an ampeg svt cl and I gotta get that 810 to go with. So wondering what's a reasonable price?
