I had a AE Throne Torcher, and for what it is worth, it was my favorite.
I also had the Dunwich Order of the Left Hand Path (HM2). It was a nice, flexible clone, but didn't have THE sound.
I used them on bass, so YMMV.

I used them on bass, so YMMV.
It did the HM-2 "thing" properly when you dime the Highs and Lows. I wasn't able to get the same Exhumed\Bloodbath tone out of the DA. Maybe it was because of the way the EQ was broken up. The AE was also a little easier to dial in a tone with. I'm not usually a "less is more" guy, but I just never found what I was looking for out of the DA. The AE was able to get that sort of classic, gnarly, grindcore mess pretty easy.
I ended up selling both as that tone wasn't proving useful to me at the time and I had other purchases to finance.

So is pretty much everyone else! Seems like it would be a no-brainer. Put in a switch to go from “vintage” to “modern” or something, maybe have it with better bass response and the standard Waza component upgrades. I think it’d be a huge hit.
After a hard night of boozin' I have shot cajun red beans and rice out my nose whilst hurling, and on another occasion pot roast and potato out the nose. After the second event I snorted in and felt a chunk of spud shoot down my throat, eliciting another round of furious heaving.
So, having decided that the SX is the bass for the time being, I'm thinking of the next mod to it is the "satinizing" of the back of the neck. I know of the Scotch Brite pad to knock the gloss off, but are there any viable DYI approaches that would result in a really nice matte finish?
220 grit sandpaper, though it may knock most if not all the finish off. I did it to the back of my jazz bass neck. If you wanted to then protect it, a quick light coat or 3 of tru oil would do it.
I want an HM2 because I want to pretend I can sound like Godflesh, but I can't justify the cost and yet another dirt pedal. I've actually got a dead MIT HM-2 in my garage, the whole thing is filthy inside (I think my dog peed on it 20 years ago) and the top board with the pots is cracked in half, but I suspect a semi-literate solderer could just wire up the pots individually and be done with it.
...which is why I look at it sometimes and wish I was one.
I think I traded an Arion chorus pedal for it in like 1989 or so. Google tells me that piece of crap fetches a decent sum now, too. Man, musicians are a weird bunch.
Honestly, everyone says the Behringer HM300 is a dead-on copy. At $25 new, you're really up against the Behringer stigma more than anything else. How much abuse is it really going to take if you have it on a board connected to pedals on either side with patch cables? Certainly it'll give you $25 worth of value.
Once you start to look at clones, you find stuff with all sorts of extra knobs and options and stuff, and I dunno, but isn't part of the magic the weird layout of the HM-2? Does it still sound like an HM-2 when you have individual controls? Also, you're paying $150-300 for a fancy copy, why not just buy the real thing at that point?

I’m with you. That’s why I just want a straight clone. All the idiosyncrasies make the pedal in this case. I’ve had the Left Hand Wrath, and I just can’t justify the expense, especially when it didn’t quite hit the tone for me. I really just want another HM-2, but those are getting prohibitively expensive for a tone I love, but realistically won’t use much. Hence, my desire for a straight clone on the cheap. My buddy had a Behringer he’s trying to find for me now, so maybe I’ll get that one soon.
Theres really no way to mess it up. 220 grit is too fine to do that much damage. Sand a little, feel the neck, sand a little more, etc to you get the feel you want. Then put the sandpaper down. You're done.
And if you are doing the tru oil after, it is just a dab in an old tee shirt. Wipe it on the neck. It will make it look wet. Don't leave a gob anywhere. Wait a few hours. Do it again. Repeat. If you want to, do a quick rub down with the 220 again. And. . . Done.
If you're really that scared of sandpaper you can try floor buffing pads. They sell small squares of it pretty cheap but if you have access to the actual floor pads you can just use the little center circle that pops out. You want the white colored ones, any other color and it'll be too rough.
I haven't used it on any of my basses (I'm lazy) but I did on a Dean six string and it was like glass. I got the idea from when I used some to sand down a rifle stock I refinished.

Yea the Modded HM2 (6 knobber) I basically changed the EQ bands to the point where its off from the original HM-2 sound. The Tyrant, The Nihilist (in all its forms) and the new Modified Heavy Metal all either use the same original EQ points or in the case of the Tyrant which had slightly modified EQ points but very close to the original). The HM-2 sound is 95% the EQ.
Alternatively, you could build an hm2. I could make some more kit pcbs for people who just want to build one.

I can do a cap swap, but wouldn’t trust myself on a whole build. I also just found a BYOC Swede already made up for $60, so I jumped on that. Hopefully, it is a straight clone as it says and sounds just like my original HM-2.

The original is going on bass since I need a buffer in that place as well, so it will be performing two functions. Well, still no bass, and I found out today that Boult is 'transferring ownership'. Now I know why they've been giving me the fukkkin run-around since Nov. Looks like a lot of people who bought from them recently are also left beating their meat in the wind with nothing to show for it. 1st world probs, yo, but talk about schittty timing.
