Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

They had a bass very close to mine there, but with rounds. Sounded very much like the other two basses through the SWR rig. So I’m nit sure it was the amp or the strings! I know I recently tried rounds in my bass again, and it didn’t sound like “me” anymore. But dang if it didn’t sound good in that store.

Ain't that the worst? That's the one thing that's had me so hesitant to really try different strings.

Yep. The guys there are great. I've bought and sold stuff there quite a few times. That Rev is gone, but they have a Reverend Thundergun and one of the Mike Watt signatures. Theres an epi violin bass that was surprisingly nice. I've played $3000 Hofners and could never get along woth them. But that Epi played pretty well. I'm just not a hollow/semi hollow guy.

There is another MGR all the way in Ann Arbor. Been there once or twice. They occasionally have some neat stuff. I got my 90s small stone out there for peanuts ($35 I think). Service stunk though.

Yeah the AA one was down the street from me when I lived there, same experience too. I'll have to stop at the troy one soon, I wanna try a thundergun. A buddy of mine has a Watt sig and it felt nice, definitely on the list of ones I'd like to own. Such killer looking bass. The inlays make it that much cooler too.

It's tough for me, regarding that thread I made. I look at my skill level, my current playing situation, my future possibilities for playing, finances, and a realistic appraisal of where I can be as a player with my extremely dodgy practice habits and lack of discipline.

Taking all factors into consideration, and beating them into a pile of mush, I just have a hard time saying to myself, "This is not a smart expenditure." This is a long, long time habit I have for anything other than essentials. I agonize over every penny, often to my wife's irritation. I want to spend the dough, I just can't make myself do it. LOL.

Edit: as for the actual bass, I've got to stick to short scales due to a left shoulder condition. Which, is fine. Although it limits the selection of basses.

no point in buying a bass if you are going to regret it afterwards, you just won't enjoy it. save the cash for a rainy day.

This Dean Metalman Z bass I got a couple of weeks ago only has a bridge pickup, so there is a lot of room under the strings. Do you think it would affect much of anything if I bolted a big brass Pentagram in the open space there?

Yes.
It would drastically effect the bass's "cool factor".

A wet/dry setup would definitely be my choice if it fit in my car. SVT and 810 are set clean with a scoop in the mids. Diavlo set dirty as hell through the 212. It’s wxactly the type of tone I’ve wanted out of pedals forever. Filthy with tons of bottom and you can still hear what I’m playing.

This Dean Metalman Z bass I got a couple of weeks ago only has a bridge pickup, so there is a lot of room under the strings. Do you think it would affect much of anything if I bolted a big brass Pentagram in the open space there?

Last week I sneezed a mouthful of 101 proof bourbon out my noise. I’ve never experienced pain like that before. Me and whiskey aren’t on speaking terms right now.

I did that with tequila 20+years ago. Like pool water up the nose x 1000.

Anyone very try the BYOC Swede? How close is it to the actual HM-2? Looking for HM-2 goodness on the cheap, and as much as I enjoyed the Left Hand Wrath, it was just too much pedal to justify for just chainsawing stuff. And I actually preferred the tone of the original. Regardless of what has been said, my original sounded better!

But since the originals are skyrocketing in price unless you get lucky, I’m hoping to try the Swede. Input?

I think a jazz body with Ric horns would look cool. If that makes any sense. I should try to mock it up.

Also, all pickups should be humbucker-sized, to make swapping easier.

I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a DOD Super American Metal on the cheap.

You’ll have to beat me to it! I have 2 of them, and they’re great. The standard American Metal is supposedly also a clone, but only has one tone knob. I find the supers slightly more trebly and harsh than the HM-2, which has a slightly better bass response. I’m sure you couldn’t pick them apart in the mix, and I can’t tell them apart as much on guitar, but that’s what my ears tell me at least.

how do you like the vox and what's the red one beside it?

I like the vox pretty well. It has more of an upper mid focus than the crybaby does. I feel like with as low as we tune it cuts through the mix better than a crybaby. I plan on replacing it with a wilson freaker wah in the future, or atleast trying the wilson out.

The red pedal is just a mission volume pedal pro with a creation wood foot pad on it. I bought it that, way thought it looked cool. I use it to mute and swell one of my amplifiers if i want to bring the volume down and back up

I have not heard it in person but there's a large volume of HM-2 Clones right now, Wren & Cuff Hangman 2D, Earthbound Audio Throat Locust, Abdominable Electronics Throne Torcher, Walrus Audio Red, Dunwich makes one that's pretty great, even the Behringer Clone gets decent reviews, TC Electronic makes one that I forget the name. The most interesting HM2 Clone to me is the KMA Machines Wurm but its absurdly priced. I bought a MIJ HM2 & FZ2 together for $80 off some guy on craigslist like 8-10 years ago. I'm debating whether to sell both of them because the prices I'm seeing people asking for are absurd now. Especially the FZ2 prices are just stupid.

I’m aware of the clones, but I’ve found I just want some chainsaw. Nothing extra, nothing “special”, just the HM-2 in all its goodness. Like you mentioned, they’re getting pricey, so I’m trying to find an affordable, well-built alternative/clone. The Swede seems to fit, but I can’t find many demos to hear how close it is to the real thing. The Behringer being plastic is a little worrisome, as it seems some enclosures and jacks will take a beating and others will not.
