Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Well, it looks like Boult is officially dead. Already filed a claim with PayPal, I'm kinda bummed they didn't deliver on the budget RD I ordered from them, was curious about how the Avedissian pickups were going to sound at least. I had a feeling that the rest of it was going to be kinda meh but I'll probably never know at this point.
In other crap news, my band said bye-bye to our drummer who pretty much gave us the /California no/ twice when I presented 2 cool gigs on a silver platter. I understand people have different priorities and shizt but how hard is it to answer a fcukin' text message. No more cool storage container rehearsal space, no more jams with the V-4B and 2x15 that was sounding f-ing unreal.
It's not all bad news bears though....the guitarist and I might just play around with emailing tracks to each other to keep the fire alive. Also met a new dude wanting to put something together from scratch, so we'll see if he comes through. Got an Acoustic Black Widow pretty much restored and I found one of those Spear Flextool basses for cheap that somebody put all new SD pickups in, and threw a better J-bass neck on it. You win some you lose some.

In 2015, at the tender young age of 40, I was told I had pre-diabetes. And most people would say I look skinny. I run half marathons and what not. Now I have to eat low carb (which isn't easy as a vegetarian) and avoid alcohol.
So many salads. Sigh.

Yeah diabetes is rough. My dad manages it pretty well with diet too, but there's still bad days. I can only imagine how much worse it would be to try to manage it on the road...

I think it is stuff to avoid because it is half behavior and half genetics. I have it all over my family, so I'm trying to do what I can. I ain't running no marathons though. It is scary that you can be that fit and still not avoid it.

I'm starting my first kit with no knowledge at all, so for now it will be paint by numbers for me too... But I think it's a good way to start learning... The more pedal kits you build, the more you go into complicated circuits, the more they will not work, so you have to troubleshoot and study a lot and you'll see with your own eyes how it works (which is a more effective way to learn IMO than just reading the theory)
I got my Swede kit yesterday and after sorting and re-checking every single part and reading and re-reading all the directions and brushing up on the tips that I'd gathered from TB and other sources, I slowly began construction.
4 hours later, I was done! I plugged in the pedal, strummed, got clean signal
Then I engaged the foot switch and
... nuthin'
I went through every resistor and ohm'd each one out to ensure I'd put each one where it belonged. I checked each diode, transistor and IC to make sure that I had the polarity/ pin1 placement correct. Still nothing.
Luckily I work with a bunch of Electrical Engineers and one of them was cool enough to spend some time with me to show me how to read the schematic and how to further troubleshoot. It looks like there might be an issue with ground but we weren't able to 100% confirm it. I'm going to continue to try to troubleshoot it this weekend but I have to say, even though there is some frustration (I could have paid another $30 and had it prebuilt and avoided the build it myself part) but the entire point of this was to learn something that will help me in the long run. I figure by the time I get this pedal working, I'll have some great new skills and knowledge to add to my bag of tricks.
On a bright note, my soldering was complemented by a couple of our EE's and techs that happened to walk by and ask what we were so involved in, so that's a plus

There are website that sell pretty much ready-to-go kits. It is only slightly cheaper than a production model, but I think it is more about doing it. My wife does a bunch of craft stuff these days so I get i could get her to do some interesting art on the enclosure.

Dunno yet. I have to chase down and fix the problem over the weekend
I imagine it becomes really cheap when you start buying the components, not in kits...
But prices I have found in Europe are still much cheaper than their "production" counterpart... Check this one, for example: Invalid Link Removed
I have no idea how close are these "clones" to the originals actually, but they cost like a 25% than boutique pedals they claim to resemble
After I get my Swede working.. I think I'm going to try out Graviton Metal Distortion Kit - Boss HM-2 Clone - Aion FX Aion seems to have some really slick kits
But I already just bought a pre-made clone!
(the builder wrote me back when I asked why it was so ugly with, "it was a special request from the client who wanted it to look like a picture of his mom's drapes" - paraphrased)
