Some examples of these "modern speakers"?

I use a Barefaced Super Twin 212. They are a custom driver in a highly engineered enclosure so they are hyper efficient, durable, have powerful excursion, and good off axis tonal quality. They are built more or less like PA speaker cabs, which also means they are flat response. The lack of a tonal character can be a little off putting.
That said, it is rated at 1200w and will compete in terms of sheer volume with an Ampeg 810. All in a 3 ft high enclosure that weighs maybe 35 lbs.

You honestly can’t make a generalization about speaker sizes. One company’s 4x10 can sound scooped and another can be incredibly mid focused. It’s about what the cab is designed to sound like, not the size of the speaker.

exactly. 10s, 12s, 15s don't have any sort of inherant sound. nor do 2x12s 4x10s 2x15s etc. my yorkville 410 had way more low end than my matamp 215s. the 215s had a lot more mids and were punchier than my ampeg 810. my ampeg 215 has more treble than any cab i've ever had. my berg nv412 sounds pretty similar to the ampeg 810.

I'm curious about this...are you using a crossover to split the signal or do you have a "stereo" setup a la Rick-O-Sound?

I swap them out depending on what I'm playing, usually bass. I played them in parallel once but stopped because I was afraid I was going to blow something (the 4x10 is 8 ohms and the 2x15 is 4) If I read the back of the amp right, it should be fine, but I didn't want to take a chance.

@cornfarmer totally get it. That's the whole reason I turned down a paint job at Tesla for BASF. Pay would be great, but not really for Cali. Would love to see my best bud on a regular basis. He's out of Oakland. @br1qbat absolutely right about Michigan. Lot of people hate, but the seasons are never that effed up and I love always being within a 2 hour drive of a great lake beach wherever you are in MI.

What’s everyone’s preferred bass cabinet set-ups? I’ve been debating between three options and can’t decide which one to pair with a 500w Fender Bassman Hybrid. The 15s are slightly cheaper but I’ve heard 4x10s pack more punch. Here are my choices...

1) A 4x10 & 1x15
2) 2 4x10s
3) 2 1x15s

What @rutrho said would be awesome but in reality, I love my mess 2x12. Louder than poopie and sounds awesome.

Does anyone here run a minimal board with just drive or fuzz? I’ve had, and still have, tons of pedals, and am finally realizing I just want one or two dirt pedals and a clean base tone. Seems like everything else I try is just a niche thing that I never really utilize. I have gotten a little use from a Phaser, Compressor, and wah, but not enough total to necessitate keeping them.

My basic setup is a Darkglass B7K Ultra with either jazz basses or my Warwick $$ 5er.

Anyone else have this same issue?

Like others have said about running the gammut, I paired mine down to a heavy dirt, lighter OD/boost and a zoom single stomp to get all my modulation needs. Works like a charm for live stuff where you don't need to worry about having it sound perfect...not that it doesn't sound great though.

I think I tried the same one, pure awesomeness.

A Fearful 2x12? Although I did get overpowered by my guitarist once. Then I turned the amp up to 3.

What is weird is that I've never had GAS for cabs and amps. Basses and pedals, sure. But amplification is more of a utilitarian necessity for me than a desire. I want to be able to move it, I want it to be loud, and I want to be able to control it. That's kinda it.

For different sounding guitar cabs I've kinda had some gas, but never bass. Weird huh?

Pedals and basses all the way, allows you to get some drastic sound changes as an effect more than base sound.

NBD, I took a shot on an obscure bass in the classifieds: an Eye's Bass. Aluminum body with Flame maple wings and a 5 piece maple neck. Pretty good so far but it arrived in EADG and I plan on either C or B standard for optimal doomin'. Forgive my terrible cellphone pic.

My not-a-guitarist take on that is that the characteristics of distorted guitar makes the amp and cabs more important than they are for a bass. Where as with bass the instrument is more important. To my ears, just about every humbucker guitar through a certain amp sounds the same.

212. Sorry, I like being difficult.
It is sort of weird that you skipped over 810s since that is honestly one of the more common configs in the stoner\doom genre.

As much as I want an 8x10, I don’t know if I could justify the carry weight. In hindsight, I should have rephrased the comment better but I digress.

Honestly, a 212 or 410 is enough with two guitars for me. We have played some small clubs where other stoner/doom bands roll in full stacks and 810's. It is overkill. In fact, numerous times, I've heard them bury their vocals because the PA couldn't keep up with the 2 guitar full stacks and bassist through and 810 or 2 410's.

Now I'm looking for speakers.. Trick is I only got a 150 for each cab..
I've got a thunderfunk 800 and 420b
Plus I'm using a lot of distortions and fuzz..
So the speakers don't need to be great
Any suggestions appreciated.. Cheaper the better.. Lol
Classic trayner speakers were cheap.. I just wanna push air.

@TSmith92 that's one rad bass! The wings look bad ass.

@socialleper I agree for the most part. The geometry of a humbucker (filtertron, etc.) can change the flavor a bit but they do sound similar to my ears. The various coil shapes of different pickups seem to be what makes the big difference.

@Adienn7 those are sweet! Not sure what you could load em with on the budget, maybe peavey's?

Buy used, but it might be a challenge on your budget especially if you're getting stuff shipped.....there's a set of four Eminence 10's on Reverb for $200 but I don't know if they suck:

4x Eminence 10" 10496 OEM bass woofers, 150 watts, open box, unused 4x Eminence 10" 10496 OEM bass woofers, 150 watts, open box, unused

15" drivers might run you a little more, maybe, but my advice is to not skimp too much. Either save up more money or wait for a deal to appear somewhere.

That 4x10 looks like it has speakers in it...?

Do any Denver folks know any singers? Ours quit, which wasn’t a big surprise because he is way too busy. We have music recorded for 7 songs. The sound we are going for is like a mix of Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, Shellac, Unwound, Melvins, Cloakroom. So not traditional metal vocals but more in the post hardcore world.

Ive had those gigs. Sound guy insists on putting our already too loud for the room guitars through the pa. Alternatively our best sounding shows have always been when i can convince the sound guy to mix the amps in the room and only run kickdrum and vocals through the PA

It's a 4x12.. I most just can't lose money if I sale them. Lol

I'm still jet lagged so I misread the cab as a 4x10 anyway, I can't see getting four 12's (matched set) for ~150....I think you can probably get two decent (used) 15's around that price if you look around enough.

For laughs I went to Parts Express and found the cheapest bass drivers they had, but they're going to run you more money:

I've never used a Celestion bass driver so I don't know what's up.
