New pedal day. Got in the run of the raw heart pedal that BAT was doing to fuel my mike scheidt fetish.

So I put the Warwick 5 up for trade. I’m done with 5+ string basses for a while. Maybe ever. I’m going to alt tune 4 strings from now on. Seems like it’s just a more viable option for me. Side note: I’m interested in some different stuff since I’ve got 5 jazz basses now with different wood, pickups(all j style), strings, etc... thinking about a Ric, T-bird, or Stingray. Anything else in the more “classic” vein I should look at? I’ve been a little bit of a jazz bass fan and haven’t ventured out if that aside from the Warwick in quite a while.

I’ll probably run one in BEAD, two in D standard, and two E standard. That’s the thought right now anyway.

Gibson/Epiphone EB-0 maybe?

Edit: You could also try tuning one of your fours in fifths, that way you cover all the range of a five but with only four strings.

For some reason I always end up with the P bass as the lowest tuned with the brightest rounds

Now I don't have a Ric, I've tried a few and I built a bass with the same pickup placement. To me Ric's and tbirds can kind of get similar scooped sounds with both pickups but offer real different tones running individual pickups. I'm not a huge fan of tbird ergonomics, but it may just be the painted neck.

I never played a stingray through an amp. Tried a bunch of sub stingrays and almost walk out with one each time. They feel real nice.

Oh and mustang basses are a ton of fun to play IMO.

I say stingray. I have a cheap one and its a hoot, super aggressive and the preamp is killer.

I’m a P bass guy. Newish rounds through my ampeg sounds pretty kickass all the time. Once the whole band is there it gets even better.

The Ray24 is the next one up the price range at $499. Schaller tuners and the neck is a bit different (J bass like)
Been happy with it. Haven’t down tuned it yet, just drop D so far

I just put my fancy jazz neck on a p bass body. Only a p bass gets me that personal best tone of all time - playing over the fretboard - that early geezer sound.
I like jazz necks though.

I've always gravitated to fender spec instruments - easy to find parts and mods galore. I can never leave an instrument stock, so why not just frankenstein one together from scratch?

I recently realized this too, breaking the g string tuner on my only bass i saw that i rarely use the g string, and everything i play there can be easily done shifting on the d string. The bass i have is a jazz copy, and the one i wanted to start with comes only with 4 strings and is a jazz copy with a music man pickup in between. I'm considering buying one and tuning BEAD

I’ve got a Marcus Miller 4 with D’Addario Pro steels, MiM 4 with Pao ferro board with Rotosounds and ash body, an alder rosewood parts jazz fretless with Chromes and an MiM alder rosewood also with Chromes. I’m getting a Schecter Diamond J in, hopefully, Wednesday. That one will most likely go to BEAD and the two MiM basses will be in D with the fretless and MM in standard.

I guess if I get another bass I might as well go with something similar as far as neck profile or at least relatively close. I’m realizing I prefer the 1.5 neck and bigger bass bodies overall. The Warwick has fantastic tones, but it’s not me. As much as I want to love it, I can’t. I just can’t get too far from my comfort zone of basses. I’m too careful with it too. A jazz is almost meant to get beat up. Like a P or something of that ilk. That Warwick has me concerned about care from scratches or dings. I think I’ve gigged it three times in the three years I’ve had it.

Maybe I’m just trying to justify getting rid of it to myself. If that’s what it is, I’m doing a good job lol.

Same here, love jazz necks and a p pickup or at least a split coil just sounds so good. I used to have a P bass special which has a j neck and I loved the tone. That and you could get a mildly scooped but beefy tone with both on.

my guitarist uses one. It’s pretty jangly and bitey. Cool sound in a band because it doesn’t fight my bass much. My guitar is an SG faded and I think it’s great. My only complaint is theirs a PCB all the pots are on and it crackles with static all winter.

I've played a couple, and I own a Bass VI, which is basically a baritone one with 3 pickups. The controls are weird on a Jazzmaster, and the tailpiece all offset guitars use is a little weird. It's easy to knock strings out of their saddles on one (there are several strategies for addressing this). That said, it's a weird guitar, but not one I'd actually advise against someone getting for their first guitar. I eye some J Mascis Squiers from time to time myself, but haven't actually grabbed one (I have dozens of guitars now).
