Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

The Re-Stoned, Elder, and Comacozer have good albums that dropped in 2019. Not sure how Doom they’d be, but definitely Stoner in my book. I’m really liking the new Monomyth, but I’m not sure it would fall into either really. Universal Hippies’ album would be the same too.

I didn't listen to many 2019 albums, but of the ones listened i liked this one more:

I didn't really come across one that really knocked it out of the park for me. Maybe I missed something.

I'm working on going through the 2019 releases I bought. I'm going to make a mix of the best 2019 stuff (IMO of course)...I did it last year and it was kinda' fun. I'll share it here when I have it ready.

With the caveats that I'm not an expert on what exactly fits the definition of Stoner/Doom and that I'm not done going through all my 2019 stuff, I'll say "Mercy" by Flesh of the Stars is a definite contender. "Carrier of Weight" by Eremit is also excellent and a contender. I will say that even though I tried to keep my ear to the ground, the stuff that really stood out to me in 2019 wasn't generally Stoner/Doom. But, more on that when I get around to posting my mix...

What’s everyone’s take on the eq section of the Boneshaker? I’m sure I’ll revisit it again, but I remember thinking that it didn’t function in the semi parametric fashion I expected. I remember an “Ah ha!” moment when it seemed as though it was +/- lo/mid/hi and +/- dirt. Then I decided it was too noisy with my Fairfield Accountant and put it on the shelf. Or maybe it’s loaned out.

I totally admit that the gain, depth and volume can be tricky and introduce noise with some settings. I really use it like an EQ or preamp for some stuff, mostly with the gain at nill. The EQ is a bit different, seems parametric, but I think the hi and low may be shelves not peaks but I could be way off. It can do a ton of sculpting though. I tend to run my regular tone real mid heavy so it's great for punching in a mild scoop and give a hot gritty jazz bass with both pickups scooped type tone.

off the top of my head nothing jumps to mind in terms of 2019 releases. seeing Boris live was the musical peak for me this year.

Oh and to add in about the Boneshaker, the depth knob is borderline useless on bass. No idea on guitar.

Hahahaha, that represents so many opinions on the album I've seen/heard. I'm impressed as a whole. Wish it was more towards the earlier stuff, but the little I've listened to is pretty epic and I'm sure will grow on me.

Well, I got to see Yob close out 2 of their last 3 shows for the year. Saw them in Seattle Thursday and Portland last night. Fantastic shows, unbelievable energy, and the nicest guys.

Bonus - they had Earthless & Blackwater Holylight opening for them on this run. The strongest lineup I’ve seen for any metal show this year.

Anyway, glad I made the trek, and here’s a photo I snagged of Aaron’s board in Seattle, since I was curious...
