Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey everyone!
A good friend of mine, and fellow bassist, introduced me to stoner metal about a month ago. I gotta say it might be my new favorite genre to listen to. I just now stumbled upon this thread and it's refreshing to see such an active one. Anyway I'm interested in exploring the genre more and was wondering if y'all have any recommendations as far as what to listen to. I really like Electric Wizard (Funeralopolis was the first stoner metal song I heard), Acid King, Weedeater, Bongzilla, and Sleep. My buddy recommends me stuff as well but I'd appreciate more recommendations from some other bottom feeders. I figured there'd be more knowledge of some lesser known bands, and maybe some bands y'all are in that I haven't heard either. Thanks!

Same here.
I'm 61 years old and listened to tons of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Cactus, Savoy Brown, Budgie, etc when those bands started and still today.
I skipped most 80's metal...got interested in new bands again when RHCP, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, RATM, Pearl Jam, etc started making records.
About two months ago, I looked at this thread and realized that there is a whole bunch of music that brings me right back to the early 70's and into new territory.
Very grateful to have looked at this thread.
Good to see that you're still looking! My grandparents are nearly 80 and they've been listening to Johnny Rodriguez, Marty Robins, and other classic country bands like that nearly exclusively since the 50's! (not that there's anything wrong with Rodriguez and Robbins!)
But yeah as a huge Zeppelin fan I totally agree that there's a lot of that heavy 70's type sound happening in stoner metal. It's amazing how the influence of late 60's and early 70's music is still being felt today.
Also it's funny how your tastes are so similar to mine. I also don't put much stock into 80's rock as a whole, with a few exceptions. And in fact it was 90's grunge that led me into Zeppelin when I was younger. So it seems like we took the opposite route but had the same destination!

those were the first albums that got me down the rabbit hole in the late 90s. then i stumbled on to Sleep's Jerusalem in 99(i think) and it exploded from there.
For me it was some time in high school. I was with a group of friends, smoking some herb, natch, and one of them handed me his walkman and said, "check this out." It was Big Bikes, by Kyuss.
I loved Soundgarden, STP, Mudhoney, AiC, et al., but one song basically handed me my ass and made me rethink everything I knew about music at the tender age of 14.
My “check this out” moment was a mixtape a friend of mine gave me. It was around 1993 or so. I hear this weird moaning instrument and then drums, bass, and guitar chime in with the heaviness unknown to me previously. It was The Wizard. I would never be the same.
After that it was the Melvins, Kyuss, Faith no More, Tad, which led into a plethora of other bands that were slower, heavier, and definitely more doom than anything I could have imagined.
One of my personal favorites is Cathedral. Not every album is a home run, but none of them are duds.
I really liked The Sword's first 4 albums, Kylesa's albums after Static Tensions, and With The Dead's first album.
Crowbar is more of a sludge band. I have liked their last few albums.
If you like a more classic rock vibe, check out Fall Of An Empire from South Carolina.
For something more trippy check out Spaceslug from Poland.
Khemmis is a great band from Colorado that combines doom with classic metal.
For me there were 2 albums that started it all. Sleep - Holy Mountain and Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun. I had listened to a little Black Sabbath but Sleep and Kyuss were the ones that I listened to over and over. For me nothing still tops Sleep Dopesmoker. I sill listen to that over and over and play guitar and bass parts along with it.
@ConfoundedBridg Om, Windhand, Kyuss, Pallbearer, Flesh of the Stars... Those are a few to get you going off the top of my head.
I'd add Earthless, Red Fang, All Them Witches to the list

Then, about a 10 year break where I discovered all sorts of other metal before getting into Candlemass and other stuff. As far as progression from Sabbath, I really don’t remember which bands came in what order, but Sabbath was the first.

Hehehe, I found Sabbath in the late 70s, none of my elementary school friends really seemed to understand. By the time I heard St. Vitus and Blue Cheer in the 80s, I had at least a few friends who "got it". Then, a bunch of other stuff, including the Melvins came along, and I was in heaven. Then, stuff happened, and I didn't hear about a lot of stuff that was metal for a long time. I actually didn't hear Sleep until around 2008 or so, after hearing other bands in the style.

I've posted stuff from this record several times here, but since we're asking about our favorite 2019 bidness recently, I'll repeat myself. This record RULES, and I've loved them since the guitarist/singer stopped being Ed Hall's drummer back in the 90s They can still bring every moment of it:
Seriously, I've worn this thing out, but I can't help myself. I love every inch of it. I wish I wrote every song. I saw them last weekend, and it was a pretty great show. If nothing else, fast forward to Breath U Can C.
If you don't know this Melvins track, you gotta listen to it, it is divine. Hung Bunny/Roman Bird Dog (The original had no titles, the names were given by fans. I don't know how those names stuck):
I also feel that the video for that song is perfect. The Boner records advert for it carried the tagline from a review, "Like watching dough rise." Exquisite. If you like that, check out the whole record, it's actually named "Lysol", but the parents of that product got mad. The original CD is a 1 track 30 minute or so experience, a landmark at the time. Among other things, it has made me the man I am today. An ex-girlfriend of a friend of mine loaned it to him, he let me hear it, and that woman is now my wife (even though she thinks of me as a bit of hesher, it's her damn CD). It's the reason that to this day, I don't think you have to tune below D to be the heaviest of shaging (hah, the content filter makes me Austin Powers) heavy. I've heard lots of bands tune lower, but nothing really matches the heaviness of that Melvins record. It's still the depleted neutronium of metal, IMHO.
Oh and if you want some good Zep influenced stoner rock. Try some Dead Meadow on for size. They universally cite them as an influence, and it shows in a good way:

I came in from my love of 70s obscure heavy rock. Started with Zep/Sabbath/Hendrix. Fell in love with stuff like Blue Cheer, Budgie, Bang, Cactus, etc.
I remember checking out Electric Wizard and not really getting it at first. My brother had dsicovered Om and Sleep and turned me on to them. I think it was Trouble that was my gateway. Them and Saint Vitus, who reminded me of Blue Cheer in a lot of ways.
From there Sleep and Wizard took hold more and more.
Some point later I got more into metal in general and got over my hangup with harsh vocals, whoch opened up the whole world of goodness.

Wow I see so many similarities. I grew up with my parents constantly playing 60s & 70s music, not just rock. But Hendrix, Cream, and Humble Pie stuck out. Loved the energies and psych feel. I got way into that stuff and played blues based stuff with my uncles until I found punk thanks to my parents. Playing dookie and Nimrod blew my mind. And I started playing it in high school bands and loved the misfits, still to this day too. Then I found Tool and Rage which focused that energy.
After college a buddy of mine asked me if I wanted to be in a metal band. My previous experience in HS playing in a very early avenged sevenfold/hardcore band was good, but brief. I said sure, but had no idea. Got to the first rehearsal and we jammed for a bit and I was meh. We took a break and drank more, but the guitarist popped up his laptop and put Desert Cruiser on his stereo. shaging blew my mind, next was Wires from Red Fang. Hook, line, and sinker I was in!
I tend to stick towards the stoner/heavy psych side than doom, but I like anything heavy.

The Action is Go Fu Manchu
Reflections of a Floating World Elder
Anything Red Fang or All Them Witches

Bushman's Revenge
I'm drawing a blank...but damn I love how varied this "genre" can get even if it's a mix with something else.
Yup those and Elder are bands I could have constantly playing in the background of my life forever.

Clutch was a big start for me. Took me a minute to get into. Not super heavy now but they started me looking for more underground bands that aren’t huge.
I’m big on mastodon, elder, witchcraft, sleep,
so more heavy psych for sure for me. I’m just not bummed out enough all the time to listen to doom. It’s cool in doses but I have a real deep love for white boy reggae a la sublime, ballyhoo and stuff like that. 311 is my absolute favorite band ever so I’m pretty all over.
