I for one, became massively impressed with Bruno Mars after listening through a whole record of his with my wife. She wanted to get into records, so I bought her some Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars. Honestly, his deep cuts were better pieces than the hits by far. Damn good composition and content. Not crazy about pop, but I have a hell of a lot more respect for him after doing that.

I don't know, I go in spurts. It depends on my goal. (Yes - I listen with a specific goal in mind sometimes because I'm a complete dork.) Sometimes, I want to delve deep into a genre, and I'll literally take every band in that genre that is currently on my iPod and just play each song alphabetically. It can take months, but it's interesting to see the variance in styles between bands of the same genre. Black metal specifically comes to mind for its diversity, though each subgenre of metal has its own stylistic differences within itself.

Anyway, when I'm not doing that sort of nonsense, I typically listen to numerous albums by a single band that I'm digging at the moment. It's currently Motörhead. Again, fun to see a band's progression (or lack thereof sometimes!) and really dig deep into their discography.

And when I'm not doing either of those things, I often listen to a single album all the way through to catch up on new releases from bands I enjoy.

The only time I really listen to single songs is on Pandora/Spotify/Satellite Radio or normal radio (when I'm with the wife/child). They don't always appreciate my taste in music.

Only speaking from my own personal experience mind you, but…Um…No shame in either of those (at least the older you get the more people tend to give you a pass on your weirdness)…

IMO a good album is one where you can pull a song out of the context of the album and it’s a good song, but if it’s a really good album the song before it and the song after the single still sound correct in the greater context of the album as a whole so if you are listening to the whole album its a natural progression…

And I agree with you that finding the time to listen to a full album can be a challenge which is why I love Pandora…($5 a month for custom radio with no ads still feels like a steal since I grew up listening to the local radio…

Although I will say that the day I figured out that I could download an entire album on iTunes just by being a monthly subscriber was a VERY good day…

Love that you can do that (I try to buy the album or mercy to support the artist when I’m able, but I think that’s a really cool feature of iTunes’ subscription service)…

Hehe, I was honestly surprised that I read it correctly the first time as Vandrer. That kind of makes that logo a work of art to me - it looks like I can't read it, but I can! Because yeah, I can't read a lot of them.

Yeah I’m gonna concur with what’s been said about the use of questionable band fonts, but I also feel like it’s used as some sort of code in that scene to keep “posers”/wannabes away…

I get that Metal basically started in the underground and a lot of people wanna keep it there (like they are some kind of gatekeeper for who’s in and who’s out), but it’s definitely frustrating to see how far those tree root style fonts have gone…

Seems to me that if you want people to listen to your music you should at least fix it to where they can know the name of your band…

If my (lack of) memory serves me correctly…

I feel like iTunes or Pandora suggested them based off the fact that I was listening to this band:



Granted, I could be totally wrong on how I stumbled on them bc it’s been a while since I listened to either band, but I’m pretty sure they got lumped together as a similar recommendation from to the Black Moth album above..

Freaking love the melodic/sultry female vocals over that heavy crushing undercurrent riff… <—- (Also why I like Windhand)…

Oh-And LOTS of people on here (including you if I remember right) have recommended some really kick@$$ bands so if I was able to pay it forward in any way for once then that makes me insanely happy… :-)

Apropos of nothing, I've commented to my wife that "I really like listening to bands with two drummers, but I don't know if I could hack a band with two drummers for very long, drummers are weird."* I really do love the sound, to the point that anything I do at home with a software drum machine, I'll at least listen to a version where I've got a second track going heavier or less heavy on the random and swing settings, or I'll even change the emphasis on beats if I'm not feeling lazy and actually know where I'm trying to go.


*I apologize to all drummers, but I can personally feel the drummer weirdness happen in myself as I become a more competent drummer. It doesn't stop me from practicing, and you guys aren't evil or anything, but being able to operate a trap set properly seems to activate neural pathways I didn't have before. Of course, my wife can seem to play about 75% of beats in about two bars of hearing it with no instruction or practice, she just sits behind whatever kit and does it. I had to practice for years to insert a fill into a 4/4 rock beat believably. So I may be the weird one.

I'm no flats expert but Chromes are pretty sweet. If it were me in your shoes, I'd try them first. Take that for what it's worth.
