Tried some fuzz pedals. The two I liked best were the Electro Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff and the Way Huge Pork and Pickle. Not surprising as they sound super similar. Decided they were too redundant to keep both, so going with the Pork and Pickle only because it has the extra clean tone and clean blend plus a switch for overdrive or fuzz. Using it as a fuzz. Listed the EH in the classifieds.

I'm surprised more people in this thread don't use Idiotbox stuff, I have the Landphil and it sounds absolutely crushing.

Holy eff, this guy's a mad genius! Nice breakdown of the capabilities, but the sounds are better!

Super fuzz, tweakable, blendable HM tone stack, and a clean blend?!?!

My friend has been telling me to get this one because I keep whining about not having a good Hyperfuzz-style pedal. I'd be all over it, but one of my feature spec requirements is the ability to blend and toggle the octave so I'm still waiting for Magic to drop the Witchfinder. Kinda tempted to pick up an Orange Fur Coat until then. Not the same effect (Foxx Tone Machine based), but it sounds amazing too.

yeah, a lot of US builders are difficult to get over here. I discovered that a lot of smaller sellers are often nice places to find the smaller brands imported. This summer I made a list of small European webshops. I believe some of them also carry idiotbox.

Thinking about slimming down my gigging board. So … what’s your POV regarding Autowah? I don’t use it much in my rock bands (one song each, actually), and when jamming to Sludge or Stoner Metal, I always feel like a “real” Wah would be the better approach. The box (Broughton Joshwah) triggers well and can be controlled handsomely via dynamics, but … I don’t know, hooking up my old Morley feels more natural, and it's not even a Bass Wah.

How do you deal with your Wah needs? ARE there any Wah needs, in your case?

I've actually been debating getting another one the past few months. I've slowly been increasing the gain on my pedals and using more treble on the amp, and Idiotbox is an affordable brand. It's been, let's see, 7ish years(?) since I've had my Blower Box. My tone has definitely changed, and my knowledge of gear improved, since then, so who knows? Maybe I'll love it next time? I've had a few pedals 3 or more times, so this wouldn't be the first repeat I've had!

My POV is simple - I am not coordinated enough to use my hands AND feet simultaneously. I tried a wah briefly, and nearly crashed into my amp and broke my head and bass open. Not for me! Sounds like you're more capable than I, though!

If you can't find a European dealer for something in the US, I know of some ways to ease the cost. I wanna say that Matt ships overseas at reasonable rates. Eitherway, yeah the cost is quite the hike once you jump any of the ponds.

I've never used a bass Wah, only guitar ones. Highly preferred over auto.

So I'm spending my Saturday night trying to transcribe the Earth Crisis classic "The Discipline" and I decide to pull it up on YouTube so I can slow down a particular part (I like how easy it is to change speed on YouTube). I swear, YouTube threw a Jack Daniels ad in before the video started. Some algorithm is probably getting a good laugh about that little prank.

Cheers. That's what I feel like at the moment, but I was wondering how often people use Autowah over traditional Wahs. At the moment though it looks to me as if it made more sense to keep one Wah each in the rehearsal rooms, and one at home, and grab it if necessary. Seems to be more sensible than to dedicate a whole slot of my smallish gigging board to the effect.

Naa, thanks, too. Makes sense. Also makes sense what you wrote above about your tone changing. I probably am subconsciously looking for a reason to keep the Joshwah on the board despite its lack of use while actually gigging. But it's one of my favourite pedals of all time (and was quite expensive to get shipped to Switzerland), so, yeah. My needs and tonal goals have shifted some over the past two years, and part of me apparently is fighting the current conclusion – that the Autowah isn't something that needs to be on the board for those goals, despite how much I like it in principle. Hrm.

If I'm being honest, plenty of my board isn't necessary... But it's fun!

I had a wah it was rad with fuzz but sold it. As far as autowah goes, I didn't have much of an opinion until Beholden to the Riff did a couple covers of OM or was it Sleep tracks? Can't remember specifically but what I recall is he used a Boss Autowah and it sounded pretty rad.

Is an autowah the same thing as an envelope filter? I think so.
I have one of those, I chose it because it's simply named "Envelope". (Sorry, no pic, I'm not at home.)
I use it in the band, on "Dragonaut".

I think it's a more specialized envelope filter, not sure though.

Autowah and Envelope Filter are pretty much the same thing. Devices marketed as “autowah” often come with additional gain stages and the like, but basically, they do the same thing.
