What's the general consensus on specific dirt circuits around here? Not necessarily the exact clone, but are we Muff-users, Rat-users, OD'ers, or what? Just wondering as I'm digging out my old Iron Pig (Rat) again and digging it. Been thinking of picking up another Rat too, just for fun. So what are some good Rat circuits out there, and what tones are we getting from them? I'd either be looking for an in your face aggressive tone or a doomy thick tone like my Muff (the Iron Pig gets close, but is definitely better at aggression).
EDIT - Kinda all over the place here. Thinking maybe MXR M85 or Blower Box? Had a BB years ago, and it was slightly too trebly, but given my recent embrace of more bite, it may just be right. Also - Landphil (tweaked BB)? Volt Thrower was also amazing, but also slightly more bite than I wanted at the time. I'd love another, but price would probably stay my hand.
I've always struggled with rats for some reason. I've always found they let lost in the mix the way I've dialed them in. I've owned a turbo rat, rat, and the blower box. It must be me cause loads of people seem to be able to make them sound ace. The blower box sounded epic at home but couldn't get it set live.
I really like muffs, but I'm stuck on the Dunwich (whatever circuit that's based on).
The other in your face distortion I loved but flipped probably daftly is the tech 21 XXL. It's a balls out distortion. Absolutely rips through a mix in the most aggressive sense. That's kinda what the WALPURGIS does but with more of a kick in the gut.
Took me an age (if I've even actually solved it) to get happy with my drive section, but I run my amp pretty hot as well so always aim to have a bit of OD on my 'clean' setting.
Great fun trying loads, I've always found ultimate test is in a band mix though to test what does and doesn't work, and some of it is dependant on what those guitarists are up to!
