I would LOVE some Death Metal suggestions actually…(Have gotten a few random ones from this site just btw since they tend to post bands I’m not really familiar with):
Angry Metal Guy
So…I get that beggars can’t be choosers, but I tend to not like traditional Black Metal both lyrically and vocally-After exploring both genres I tend to enjoy Death Metal bands more than Black Metal bands…
Black Metal vocals are annoying to me at that pitch/rate to begin with and while people are welcome to believe whatever they want, I tend to not go in for the whole Satanic angle bc those particular lyrics don’t really appeal to me…
To further clarify-I don’t mind borderline tongue in cheek type stuff or where the band has said “This is just our image” or if lyrics are essentially incomprehensible bc I tend to not notice-I’m talking more about bands like Mayhem and some of those bands from Norway in the 90s that actually burned churches down…(FWIW-I really enjoyed Lords Of Chaos even though I’ve read it is not very accurate to what happened in that scene)…
That minor disclaimer above not withstanding-I stayed away from Death Metal for a while due to not liking the vocals, but the last couple of months I’ve gotten a lot more interested in that sub genre and I don’t tend to really think about the whole cement mixer/guttural vocals bc the music is ultimately what makes it or breaks it…While I still prefer clean/melodic vocals I realized one day that I need to be more open minded on vocal styles…
As I’ve listened to more Slipknot, Slayer, Lamb Of God, (and occasionally Kreator) I think I’ve gotten a little more accustomed to crazy/incoherent vocals over a lot of double bass so maybe (???) that’s why I’m less bothered by Death Metal style vocals…
Side note: I have listened to a $hit ton of Pantera over the last 25 years as they are still one of my favorite bands ever…I actually didn’t like Lamb Of God for a really long time bc I felt like they were just ripping off Pantera…After a lot more listens with a more open mind I believe Lamb Of God are their own thing even though they sound somewhat similar…(I REALLY like the direction Lamb Of God went on their last 3 albums)…
I’m aware that those bands I just listed aren’t Death Metal, but I’m trying to give you some context on bands that have served as a really good gateway drug for more extreme music as I’ve noticed I tend to like some unholy mashup of Thrash, Groove, and Death Metal…
I think that is what I like about Steel Bearing Hand’s last album just btw-They kind of genre straddle-They sound more Death Metal, but you still get a lot of Thrash and some Stoner/Doom hints when they slow their tempo…
Some more extreme Bands/albums that I like beyond Steel Bearing Hand and Suffering Hour (since I already listed those two):
[In no particular order]:
-Death - Human (not really “sold” on some of their other albums, but I was impressed by this album
-Entombed-Left Hand Path (Wolverine Blues isn’t bad, but I seem to like Left Hand Path a lot better)
-Cannibal Corpse- Violence Unimagined
-Black Dahlia Murder- Nocturnal
-Carcass-Heartwork (I only got around to listening to this album this week, but VERY impressed after only a few listens-I need to listen to some of their other albums)
-Obituary-Could use a good album recommendation here-Songs I’ve heard I like overall-I feel like I gave Slowly We Rot a chance a couple of times, but probably need to listen to that one again
A few Cradle of Filth songs-I haven’t really dug into their catalog, but occasionally I notice a song or two I like when I’m listening to an iTunes playlist
-Arch Enemy (I’m not sure they qualify as “Death Metal”
-At The Gates-Slaughter The Soul (downloaded and listened to that a couple of times a few months back, it need to revisit)
-Gatecreeper-Need to give them some more air time, I really like their tempo and drum work and production/mix seems very well done
I feel like I’m missing a few others, but hopefully this will give you an idea of some bands I’ve tried out while exploring the genre…
To your other question-Yes, I’ve heard of Bolt Thrower, but haven’t given them a ton of listening time, so I will give them another shot based on your suggestion (along with the others you posted)…
Thank you for reading-REALLY appreciate the suggestions…
Follow up question-Is there a Death Metal thread on TB any where???
LOVE this particular thread bc it goes every direction imaginable, but also wanna be respectful of other people’s tastes here as Stoner/Doom Metal is a lot slower than Death Metal and I’m not trying to hijack the thread even though no one here has discouraged me from talking about other genres (which I GREATLY appreciate)…
Thanks! \m/
EDIT/Update: WOW I love the underlying riff in that Bolt Thrower song you posted…That’s the kind of stuff I’m after…Will try to listen to more of their stuff over the next couple of days…You can’t go wrong with a riff that sounds that Apocalyptic/Ominous
