Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Sam, I'm bummed to read this. Has Monobrow gone the way the way of the dodo?

In it's current form, yes it's done, but we all want to keep creating music, however we all agreed that it needs to be something very different. We've taken this current format as far as we can take it, and we don't want to just keep rehashing the same stuff over and over again. Agreeing on a new direction has been tough and nothing has inspired us to really take a shot at it yet. So for now I guess it is TBD, I'm hopeful that something will click once things go back to being more normal. Time will tell.

I HAVE to play bass. When I've gone long stretches without doing so, it wears on my mind. And since I've started my new practice regimen, I'm feeling much better emotionally (as well as improving, I hope!). So there's a two-fold benefit. I'll say this though - I feel I need to be progressing when I'm playing. For most of the last 5 years I've barely played comparatively, and didn't go anywhere when I did. Just endless noodling. After a while, that also wore on my psyche. Made me feel like a waste. But lately, bass has been my mental health weapon of choice, like it was for many years. Enjoying it - and the rest of life - like I haven't for a long time. But as always, do what makes you happy. No one else can do it for you.

I’m not in a band, but my advice would be to try to have as much fun with playing what want as you can and eventually it’ll (probably) come back…

On the subject of hobbies and habits in general-I’ve been turbo busy at work the last few weeks and most of this year, but I try to play here and there when I can even though I haven’t gotten in as much time as I’d like…

Friday night I was so exhausted I almost didn’t play at all after a VERY long week…

Promised myself I would play a song or two off of Master Of Puppets…Ended up playing along to the whole freaking album like I do most Fridays (apparently I just needed to get started that night)…

The reason I share that story-I felt like I played exceptionally well that night despite not wanting to play at all (not even a little bit)…

Have noticed that with working out too- There are MANY days where I’m exhausted and don’t wanna exercise, but somehow the days where I’m least likely to wanna do it are the days that are somehow the best…

So I would say-Maybe try to practice or play something you want and it see how it goes, but there is nothing (I repeat NOTHING) wrong w/ wanting to branch out and do other things especially if you feel like your hobby has become an obsession and all the fun has gone out of it…(Been there myself with another hobby)

You probably can’t “force” it to come back anyway, so hopefully you will find something you enjoy in its place until your desire comes back…

But in the meantime-You don’t owe anyone (including yourself) an explanation…

Hope this helps…

Thanks! \m/

there's really only one answer: Monobrow Mark 2: A Jazz Odyssey

I am a degenerate video game junkie. To the detriment of my bass playing. I play a silly zombie apocalypse game on my iPad called Left To Survive, and dear Deity, it just sucks me in and will not let me go. It's evil, pure-D evil.
I solve this problem by spending my money on pedals I won't be able to play much. Without that disposable income, I can't afford modern systems or games!

I rarely game for various reasons, I don't keep up with the latest/greatest but if it's a title I'm interested in and I can run it, I'll at least try it out. Cyberpunk 2077 totally sucked me in recently and for $30 on sale I got lots of entertainment for short money. I think I got it mostly because of William Gibson/Neuromancer, not the RPG it's based on.

I dare say that I'd recommend it, which I never do for a f'n videeah game. There's this rock band element to the plot that I think I might re-create the bass from, now that's f'n nerrrrdy.

I heard it had a lot of bugs when it first came out. Is that all smoothed out now?

I was a huge video game junkie, but fell off once I got married and didn't have the time. Even my minor league career took a back seat and once the kids came, music too. It's life, I get to things when I have time. One day I'll get back to playing lacrosse, playing shows, building guitars/basses, and video games.

I have my SNES, I need to start setting up short sessions like I do for bass. I know that'll help my mental state for sure.

@bassboysam, been there before. I know how ya feel, we've been on hiatus for years but recently have jammed a couple times. I think once our families settle a little bit more we'll be back at it more frequently.

Best of luck, love your guy's stuff. Will be cool to see what you guys experiment with when you do get back to it.

One thing I know helped us through this slow time was just jamming for fun and trying new sounds way different than the rest of our material and jamming on covers. Hell one time we played "stand by me" and jammed on it for 20 minutes. We set no rules and explored jazz, blues, prog, you name it. Lots of funk too, loved that poopie. We set no precedence and just wanted to enjoy playing with each other.

I'll admit one thing that I think keeps it fun for us, is that somehow regardless of the "genre" or feel, we somehow still put our signature stank on it. I'll still sit down and listen to poopy phone recordings of jam sessions. Hell we never even called rehearsal or practice by name, just called it jam sessions.

I know you guys are vets, but I for one hope that you'll at the very least be able to keep playing together. That's what really matters, having fun with friends.
