Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Rough phone pic but I finished the Hi Flier. Other than the neck plate, truss rod, and pickup covers, everything else is non-original. Had to plane down the back of the headstock to fit the tuners, but it was weirdly thick to begin with. 5-ply pickguard and truss rod cover for more of a vintage vibe, and I tweaked their shapes a bit. Had to make new pickup rings too since they're not the standard size. Even had to install side markers on the fretboard because the bass didn't come with them. Was a fun project but required so many damn router jigs.
Despite some of the bass' awful original hardware and entry-level status, it's got a 3-piece maple neck and a decent hardwood body. Unfortunately the frets are pretty worn and there's a lot of rattle, so I think I'll have to suck it up and get a refret.
It's tuned to BEAD but I've never had a 5 string so I need to figure out what to do with the extra notes

Taylor Hawkins.....this year's gotten a bit dark on the big musician front...Not wholly related, but still heavy AF and a hell of a drummer.

I'm just bummed out that again I told myself, ahh they'll be round next year and I'll catch em then...

Completely Agree…

Dude was talented, but even more important-He always seemed like SUCH a decent human being from interviews I’ve seen and what other people said about him…

And to your other point-Not really a fan of 2022 so far…

Thanks! \m/

Some heavy stuff happened for sure. See my post in the Fuzz Addict thread if you haven't already: Fuzz addict club! If you don't like it fuzz off!

Long story short: Bluebeard is still my favorite bass fuzz.
I did see that one. I need to try a Magick and Bluebeard one day. But for now, my Pharaoh Supreme reigns, well - supreme! Did some minor tweaks to my Grey Stache and Cat Tail today, basically just lowered some treble content on each. Nothing serious. Just really digging my tones lately. Probably the best I've ever sounded rig-wise. Which means when I sound terrible I have only myself to blame... Hate when that happens. Gotta get back to practicing.

for what it’s worth, I’ve had both the supreme and Bluebeard and they both sound great but also so similar that the differences were minimal/negligible.

Hi :)
I'm not dead don't worry!
I still come by and read this thread now and then, even tho I haven't been joining the conversation for quite a while, sorry I have been in passive mode :bag:
Relevant news: I tried tri-amping and in this moment I have more cabinets than pedals on my board.
Oh, and I liked the Funeral Mask record a lot.
Good to hear from you! Would love to hear/see that Tri-amp setup. I've done bi-amping but never tri

I think I can figure out how that song will end. Good to see you around :)
Howdy!

Oh I only tried because at some point I had 3 amps, one was bought to temporarily replace one I had to repair. I ended up liking it quite a bit (at the beginning I hated it!)
It's a Marshall Valvestate I bought for real cheap, actually in the end was one of the best deals ever. I connected it to an Ampeg cab I was about to sell, and I found a cheap Morley ABC. The mix sounds monster, but nothing much different from bi-amping, only bigger. :D
I tried to record all three (I'm recording the demo for the band right now), but I realized that I have no skill nor enough mics to manage three amps, so no tri-amping in the demo...
And TBH, it doesn't even make much sense unless you use the 3rd one in "creative" ways, which I would like to try in the future.

FWIW, I believe Nick McMaster (Krallica, Geryon) tri-amps in case you're looking for some inspiration.

Grey stache into cat tail has been my always on fuzz lately at punk gigs

TalkBass, are you listening? :roflmao:

I am! I talk to myself all the time! If only I listened better...

This. This is what I and my wallet need to hear. You're doing good work here. I'm glad that the Supreme isn't "unobtainium" like the Bluebeard.

I spend too much time tweaking single pedals for tones. If I needed TWO dirt pedals for a single tone, I'd never actually play! (Not that I play much anyway, these days. Never enough time to play to my heart's content.)

2 dirt pedals can be so nice though... I really like stacking my Fuzzrocious Li'l Fella with a Muff. Swollen Pickle works great!
