Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Rawr, Haven't been around these parts in a spell... work has been kicking my ass for a good while now, so less time to poopiepost on forums, or even practice all that much. It's been a bummer to say the least.

The upside is gigs are picking up around the bay area again, so we should have a couple instrumental shows lined up soon with similar themed bands at least. So on that front been thinking about what to do bass wise, keep on with the fretless (after it gets some new tuners and some more love) or switch over to a dingwall.... choices choices, lol.

Stay heavy everyone!
Yo! See ya pop up on insta here and there. Seems like you've been busy replacing just about every part of your jeep. Lol. Good to see ya drop by here!

Drove out to NC for my brother's wedding, caught COVID (finally...I was beginning to wonder if it would ever find its way to me), had to drive back to CO while still a bit sick which made the drive through Kansas which is usually just boring feel more like torture, worked from home all week and had zero motivation...but now I finally feel like I can kick my ass back into gear. Making some noise is definitely on the agenda for this weekend.

Well, I have some good news to report.

After a ssllooww legal process, the divorce became official in early May. Shortly afterwards my ex and son moved to their new home. Since then, I live alone.

Now living alone is the part I dreaded. I lived alone for some time when I was very young , and I couldn't do it. I barely kept myself alive, but wasn't able to make money or keep the house clean. Long story. So naturally I've been wondering if this time around I'd do any better.

Turns out I'm doing well. I go to bed on time, I go to work on time, I do the laundry and other chores. I cook healthy food for myself, and I regularly go for a run.

Also, I'm drinking less alcohol, I'm drinking less coffee, and I'm eating less candy. I even practice the band music more.

So to my surprise, I'm starting to feel this divorce was actually a good idea.

:wideyed:

Congrats...keep improving and before you know it you'll have all the lame stuff way back in your rearview mirror.

Been Hammock camping a little bit recently. I much prefer it to sleeping on the ground lol, and it's lighter

Hammock camping is sweet...I found, though, that I like to have a "house" (even if it is a flimsy little one person ultralight tent).

I love tent camping though.

All of this, yes! Old boy scout here, LOVE tent camping, and I'm glad that the past few years I've finally managed to get my "city girl" of a wife into it as well. And now that I'm in charge of camping, I love even more since I can bring all of my fun gear like Dutch ovens, a nice big tent, cots... Love it!

Oh man, I'm totally dorking out on hammocks! I spent 5 days over the 4th in the BWCA with my brother and a buddy. Buddy had a hammock that he raved about but it failed on him. To be fair, it was an ultralight prototype tester his wife got from work, not a production model. My brother had a hammock with insufficient bug proofing. They were both up for more, with tweaks. I slept well on the ground, but we slept 3 full size dudes ~6'+/- and 180-200lbs, in a 3 person backpacking tent 2 nites. Whole trip was sweet and re-invigorated my love of quality time in the hoon.
What's everybody using?

@themarshall I noticed your location, and on the RV trip from Hell we drove back thru Appleton and over to La Crosse.....not knowing dick about any of that area, I thought it was aiiiiiight in La Crosse, what's the skinny on that area?

Greetings!

I am embarrassed to admit that, in my early 40's, I *just now* discovered these genres of heavy music, special thanks to a YouTube user named "Molten Universe" who put together more than 40 playlists of Desert, Stoner, & Psychedelic, and it has become the equivalent of musical potato chips-- I can't stop!

Some of the bands that stand out to me so far are Kyuss, Fu Manchu, and even a quirky one called Motodrone! My favorite so far is Slo Burn-- I love the combination of aggressive tempo and fuzzed-out AF guitars!

Regarding bass in such a band, is it more advantageous to use a big, wooly fuzz? Or a tighter, hard-clipping distortion to try to cut through the thick, fuzzy guitars?

I currently have a Maxon OSD-9 (think MXR Distortion+ or DOD 250 circuit in a TS-9 chassis), a Wampler Ratsbane (modified RAT circuit) and an EHX Big Muff Pi on my guitar pedalboard, as well as a Darkglass A.D.A.M. for bass. If you wouldn't mind letting me know what to try as a starting point, I'd appreciate it!

In case it matters, my basses are a G&L LB-100 with stainless flats, and an Ibanez SR-300 with nickel-plated rounds.

Thanks in advance!

Well, to be honest, it's a matter of taste and what the guitars you're trying to mesh with sound like.

This is probably the least helpful thing to say, but I'd try combinations of all three. Listen for what you like, and listen to see if you're sitting where you want to in the mix. One of my favorite pedals is my Idiotbox No Moon. It's a Tube Screamer, Muff and RAT clone in one box running parallel. Depending on the circumstances, I'll use one or all three.

Alternately, I'll just use a Super-Fuzz and make everyone else fight for their place in the mix. :D

You're off to a great start...Kyuss is tough to beat when it comes to stoner rock (IMO...but I don't think that's a controversial opinion). For more of the doom side of things, make sure to check out Sleep. Dopesmoker is Sleep's best album IMO (and it was my entry point for them), but it might not be the best place to start. I'd recommend starting with The Sciences.

There's a lot of great music in the stoner/doom world...enjoy the ride!

I'm up nort' now, but I went to school at UWL in the late 90's/00's and lived in the Winona area most of my life. The river and coulee or "driftless" region as the cool kids call it, is really special. Weather is kinda mixed bag - four seasons, but hot and humid in the sumer and cold AF in the winter. Climate change seems to have manifest in compressed shoulder seasons and increased flash floods.
Music scene in LaX used to be pretty good; I'm kinda out of touch and especially can't say since the pandemic. Was more active in Americana and jam stuff. The punk scene was sick bitd. Popcorn tavern is an institution, as was the Warehouse. The Bodega was way ahead of it's time, as was Pearl Street brewery (-holy sh!t, I just remembered I saw the Greg Koch trio at the PSB right before the initial lockdown. Saw Hayes Carl at the Dakota in MPLS the next night, then the world changed. sorry for the ramble, shout out JoeyC) Dave's guitar shop is really good, but bass stuff can be hit or miss. Good skatepark. Higher profile opiod/homeless situation than I remember, but that's everywhere. Culturally, it seems to follow a pattern of other towns/small cities in the midwest with a large student population in that it's just a little less diverse than you'd think or hope it could be.
Now, perhaps most importantly - they drink. Listen to Lewis Black's rant about drinking in Wisconsin, and you'll get an idea. Beer, bars, and football are very much part of the culture.

Having been turned off by a lot of 5 strings over the years, I like and have kept around a Yamaha BB N5. They may look too boring to some folks, and the stock pickups are just OK, and kind of lower output. But they are solid and built pretty well (Taiwan). I got a beater for practically nothing and it needed some things but turned into a great bass. It's all over the record in my sig :cigar::cigar::cigar:

I read somewhere that DiMarzios make a set that fit, eventually I'll get around to swapping them once 100 other projects are done......how many years from now

Rutrho’s here, rutrho’s here!!!! Good to hear from you! I don’t have a strong feel for the current 5 string offerings, but I’ve had impure thoughts about the Ibby headlessesses. Wish that rose gold was offered across lines and models.

Edit:

4003S/5 looks cool, and my personal favorite is the g&l L2500, but mostly for the mf’s

Allright y'all, i'm getting ready to start shopping for a new 5 string bass... anything else I should look at besides an Ibanez BTB or a Dingwall-something?

I'm a big fan of the Ibanez SRMS series. I used to have the fiver and only sold it to make room for my Dingwall. Now I have the 4 and 6 string SRMS basses. The SRMS806 is my daily driver these days.

At the end of the day, though, if I had to choose one and only one of my five strings it would have to be the Dingwall NG. It's really, really difficult to find a fault with that thing. Don't be fooled by 99% of the demos...it's definitely capable of more than just the stereotypical DingGlass tone.

If multiscale isn't your thing, and if I were in your shoes, I'd probably get an Ibanez SR with the same string spacing as the GWB (assuming you still have that) for muscle memory purposes. All the SR basses punch way above their weight IMO.

Having owned a couple of the Ibanez headless basses (and sold them), I felt they went a little too far in making them light. It seemed to me they need a little bit more meat on the bones. I'll freely admit this could just be my imagination, but in my somewhat limited experience I seem to prefer solid body basses to those that are heavily (no pun intended) chambered.

Asking for a heavier bass...heresy on this forum, I know.

All that being said, a lot of people like them and they're definitely worth checking out if possible.

Too many projects is the theme fosho... I've played one of those Yamaha BB basses, they're great, haven't seen one in a spell... I'm def looking at fan frets atm, but those are contenders.

mmmm G&L. Forgot about those...

I'm playing on a SRMS805 rn, its a great bass. its sorta on loan from a buddy, but i'm trying to track down a pre-amp issue in it, but its been killer so far. just needs a setup... and some adjustment... etc...
LOL.
I've liked it a lot so far, still trying to dial the tone in with it a bit but its been good.
I'm a fan of the ding/glass tone, so I'd really like to get a dingwall and i have a couple friends with em here. But i'm also REALLY strongly looking at an ibanez BTB805MS. I'm a big fan of the BTB series basses, so I'm trying to track one down...

My poor GWB35 had a tuner fail, so I'm also replacing ALL of the on it and getting it back up to speed.

Those MS BTBs look sweet. I had a sixer on preorder then cancelled it when I realized the string spacing would be too much for me with that many strings. When it comes to fives, though, the BTBMS seems like it would be worth serious consideration. I'd want to try one in person though...the Dingwall is a tough act to follow. I'm curious if Ibanez is able to make it not feel like a huge reach to get to the first fret, like Dingwall has been able to do.

It was said a few posts ago, but I have to throw out the G&L L-2500 as well. Of note: If you need a 22-24 fret fingerboard for your 5-string then it wouldn’t be for you as it’s a 21 fret neck. I have rarely come across a bass that can do multiple metal genres as well as this bass does, much less multiple genres outside of metal.

Just make sure you hunt down a USA model if you need a thinner neck than what’s on the Tribute series.

No idea, since I don't play the V, but good to see you again.

Edit: after reading a bit more, would your friend sell you the bass they loaned you? You'd be almost all the way there, needing only to sort out the pre-amp issue.

Double Edit: just ran across this in the Classifieds: For Sale/Trade - MIJ Ibanez BTB515WNF
