Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I think my latest bass was a squier Rascal with the 2 wrhb pickups. Got it for my daughter as an Xmas present couple years back. She loves it, though the sucker is a bit big and heavy, but it has so much beefy tone.

I need to do some more set up work on it. I could really use the practice too. It always feels good to focus into something and get into the weeds for a bit. There's a point though where I start to go OCD and need to pull back or I'm sucked in till it's perfect. Shouldn't be a problem, except that normally perfect takes forever and there's way better things to "waste" time on.

@davedamage those basses always looked so cool, I never knew they'd do a 5 string.

My newest bass is still over a decade old. Carvin PB4 (before they switched to Kiesel) setup for BEAD. Pretty standard, passive electronics, alder body, maple neck, nothing much fancy other than stainless steel frets, but it gets the job done for the heavy stuff. When I first got it I thought I might replace the stock pickup with a Dimarzio Model P, because that's what I have in my standard tuning bass and love it, but I found I like the kinda hi-fi sound of the stock pickup

Vigier Passion II
/corksniff

This would be my 2nd. The 1st was a modded/mangled Passion supposedly owned by Joey from Manowar. I put that one back to stock as best I could, then years later botched a DIY refinish on it under the influence of boredom, depression and a severe over-estimation of my skills.

This one is the one I always wanted.

The only bassist I've ever know to play a Vigier was Geezer. No clue Joey from Manowar did too! Can't say I've heard much about Vigier in general, though.

^ That's when I first saw one, when Tin Machine played on SNL. Couldn't hear it of course (SNL bands always were mixed half as.sed). But man it looked cool. Locked it away in my memory until years later I figured out what it actually was. The first one was really great, even though the original preamp was long gone. The second one above was not messed with, and good lord, there's nothing this thing can't do. It plays itself.

Well, Bowie was always full of surprises. I was always a fan, but he would occasionally take left turns that were kinda “meh” for me, like “Modern Love” after “Scarey Monsters”.
TM was edgy and stripped down, an unlikely but interesting diversion, and as for Hunt Sales, I thought he put in a great performance. Not that many drummers are known for a singular iconic beat(regardless of how complicated it may or may not be)…


If you didn’t know about Tony and Hunt’s dad, that guy was insane(in a good way). A notoriously crazy kid’s show host/comedian, ‘Soupy’ Sales was always pulling goofy stunts on his TV show.

Wish I could, but i got nothing. Drone jams and whatnot is something I'd like to start delving into. I've always dug it, but kinda had a "I have no effing clue where to even start to figure out how to do it" angle.

Investigate the EHX Super Ego+, or the original, which would be less money on the used market. The Plus features added integrated effects, as well as retaining a general effects loop, plus some other features over the basic model. One wicked little trick I’ve employed on resultant drones is to use a pitch bend/“whammy”(my go to is an EHX Pitchfactor with expression pedal).

Well, yeah hahaha! I guess I meant more on the layering and such. Achieving the ambient noise, pads, synths, reverb sounds, etc. DAWs and such are very much not a strong suit of mine.

Had a decent gig Saturday night. As usual, it wasn’t without flubs here and there but my favorite mishaps are all in one clip:

Guitarist fkd coming out of the solo. Bad.
That made me laugh and miss the start of the next verse.
Drummer stabbed the tom so hard it fell over at the end of that same verse.

We were saved by the next band’s singer but hey-we kept rolling lol




This one is actually decent.
