Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

When my grandpa was a teen in the 40's (or thereabouts, not sure of the exact year...) he had a hunting accident where his shotgun overheated and went off unexpectedly. (Apparently modern gunpowder doesn't do this as it's safer or something, not sure). Short version - he had a massive nasty scar on his right elbow the rest of his life, and his right hand was permanently making the "handgun" gesture (pointer and thumb both extended) as part of nerve damage. He was lucky - almost no doctors would even attempt to save his arm at all, and his mother literally had to find one ASAP. Most doctors would have just amputated. They found one in time willing to try to save the arm, saved the arm, and he had to learn everything again, but left-handed.
My day job is adjusting/running work comp claims. I can say that the outcomes for rotator cuff surgery are generally pretty good. Total shoulder usually trades a limit on range of motion for pain reduction/elimination. Both are fairly routine for the orthopedic specialist. But expect a lot of painful PT afterwards. Fingers crossed for ya
I'm trying to imagine where he was holding the shotgun, I can only envisage it was in the crook of his elbow as he was walking. The classic "Hunter at rest" position.
I've been through post-surgery PT 3 times on my right knee, so, I'm cognizant od the agony that is heading my way. Thanks for the positive vibes.
I'm going to give the doc the puppy eyes when I ask him for the scrip for 10,000 Percocets.

I've seen Boris three times. Pink is hands-down my favorite of theirs. I've only ever heard them play one song of that album live and that was Farewell. They're finally doing Pink and they're not playing Milwaukee. Closest is Chicago. On a Sunday.And they're playing Pink in its entirety. I'm going on Halloween

Although, the tour with Melvins is going to be hard to top.
I feel your pain, closest they're playing to me this time around is Austin. But yeah, it would be hard to top the Melvins double bill.
Hehehe, and today I finally have this framed and up on the wall.
I have long been planning to raise the nut of my 4 string 28.6" scale Mikro Bass, and turn it into a slide bass, and when the Eastwood Sandman bass thread came up I decided to take the plunge and go through with it.
Strung with Elxir Nanoweb guitar strings of the gauges .068 - .046 - .036 - .028, and tuned B - F# - A# - D# (that is a baritone kind of tuning).
Tuned to be played single string, 2 strings at the time, or 3 upper strings together.
This is how it looks after the mod:
Raised to about 6mm (~0.24") over the first fret, with a piece of wood cut to size under the nut, and then going ever so slightly upwards, towards the bridge at a quite low angle.
Equipped with a single bridge EMG Geezer Butler J pickup, from the P/J set, and it sounds great.
Definitely going to be used in my doom/stoner rock project.
Slide guitar sounds awesome!

I also vaguely remember some Cop Shoot Cop songs involving slide bass. Here's an early and really violent version "Fire In The Hole" with what looks like a metal bar being used as both a slide and a pick to bash the strings with, but there was also more conventional use later, I think.

Hey, all. Just checking in. Nothing new to report on the bass front. Did sell a guitar, but, that's about all that is new.
Not much going on here, just playing my bass and guitar sporadically for fun in my bedroom. I've done about 99% of the work to get a recording computer setup again, so hopefully more than that soon. In the meantime it's all just trying not to melt and spreading out back to school shopping trips with my kids. My daughter got bangs for the first time, that was the big excitement for the week.

We've been recording practices more frequently and the writing is getting less and less doomy as it comes along. I may post something one of these days...

I'm not entirely sure. I mean, everyone wants to think they're reinventing the wheel, but I think it's more three guys that aren't that young anymore with wildly different influences and the piecemealing that comes with it. I really dig it, but objective criticism is definitely needed.
And nothing like a bunch of [mostly] anonymous forum denizens to provide that, amirite?
