Hehe, I like how he thinks, and I'd love to hear the results. But I so doubt it would sound like a bass into a Super-Fuzz (or any of its many clones).

Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Spent the day reading about the Bayeux Tapestry and learning Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" - which was mostly simple except for the one part of the solo I can NOT get the timing right on... Seriously - the part itself isn't even that hard to play, I just keep coming in either slightly early or slightly late. There's nothing to cue me in as far as I can tell, and I just play the same little series of notes repeatedly. I have to count the measures manually, and as someone who's never been trained in traditional music theory, this is way harder than it should be. I'm hoping that as per my usual routine, it'll just snap into place tomorrow when I review it.
Similar note - anybody know a place to get tabs for songs that can be transcribed to a 5 string? There are tons of other Sabbath songs I'd love to add to my repertoire, but many of them are in C#, and I'm too lazy to reconfigure a bass for that tuning (though I realize it may come to that). I figure maybe I can just use my 5 string for it, as Geezer doesn't typically hammer on the open strings that much.
And finally, I'm still digging my Russian Pickle. Definitely keeping it this time, and I think it'll replace my Pharaoh Supreme on the second board for now. I tweaked my Priestess on my main board to be more "Russian", and it's an amazing tone.

Addendum - I think I got Heaven and Hell down. Played through it twice this morning, and so far, pretty much nailed it. Yay for practice! And my son randomly took an interest in guitar as I jammed last night. Short version - I tuned an old guitar, and somehow a string broke. While detuning a string - never heard of a string breaking while lowering the pitch... Anyway, with that having happened, I decided to just get a new set of strings and ordered some heavy gauge D'Addarios for guitar and bass. Never really liked those strings much anyway (DR Black Beauties), and never really used those instruments in their current tuning (Drop D). The strings always seemed hollow, without bass, and far too trebly. So I WILL have a bass and guitar set up for C#. Geezer and Tony are certainly nodding in approval somewhere.
this is a long one, finally got the living room practice setup squared away, my drummer did everything i asked him to 
switching from the rumble 25 to the ampeg rb210 has been weird, the rumble was more similar to the mesa than the ampeg
amp set flat no super grit, no ultra lo, no ultra hi, all controls at noon
korg beat boy into the aux in - yes it does sound bad already, haven't tried it at show volume, but it's pretty casio like, horn might help
stingray strung with rounds with mids cut and highs and low boosted - might need to use the horn with this bass, harmonics aren't too lively
lb100 strung with ti jazz flats and tone control around 2 - total juan alderate doctor octagon/twiggy ramirez mechanical animals 90s tone
i didn't use the send and return for the effects, probably out of habit, not sure if would make a difference
- blue poly octave fuzz - eqd spatial delivery v3 - diamond compressor jr - ibanez mini flanger - broughton one control -
the broughton cleaned up the boomyness from the octave fuzz however, it seemed to have less effect on the envelope filter
in closing i made a new artist statement
i can no longer express myself through visual art
going forward all messages will be communicated via supa funk

Thought this group may have some input here - now that I'm deep into fuzz-land after recently falling in love with my Russian Pickle, what are some other fuzzes in a similar sonic territory? Not just "Russian Muffs" (because I know there are TONS out there), but ones that have a similar tone/feel to the RP? I ask because I (as usual) shot it out against some of my perennial favorites again today, and the Priestess was able to sound very similar, but with a bit more clarity and not quite as scooped (probably why there was more clarity!), as well as being not quite as smooth as the Russian Pickle. The Russian Pickle is definitely going on board #2 for a while to replace the Pharaoh Supreme which couldn't quite get there tonally, but what other options are there? I'm thinking perhaps the mids knob is the key, though historically the only Muffs I've liked with mids knobs in the past have been the CMC offerings - and I'll hopefully be shooting those out tomorrow. I've had the EHX Reissue, and it was nearly as good as the Russian Pickle, but I preferred the Pickle to it back then, and listening to videos has me convinced it's gainier than I'd like, and if I'm going to go for another straight "Russian" clone, I'll just get another Russian Pickle (which may happen anyway...).
So far, I'm thinking maybe some sort of Hoof would fit the bill, but I've never played either variety. I hear the Cloven may be better on bass, but the extra gain mentioned has me worried, as I generally prefer lower gain options - even on the Russian Pickle I've only got the gain at 10:30. I'd also very much prefer top jacks and something fairly simple to get a hold of.

i wish i could be more helpful, but the only things i ever had any real legitimate success with were the bass modded geiger counter square wave/static blast settings, the rat tail with no diodes, and the mxr blue poly octave atari/commodore 64 fuzzyness
Got the new strings in today, and totally botched the guitar. Been forever since I've re-strung a guitar, and broke a string. So now I have to get a new set, as a single string is prohibitively expensive. Thankfully, that didn't happen when I re-strung my bass and tuned it up to C#. And even more shockingly, I didn't have to adjust a single thing on that bass. I changed tunings from Drop D (which I never used) all the way to C#, including a heavier gauge, and it played perfectly without having to adjust anything. It's a thing of beauty. Which also meant I could start learning more Sabbath, so I quickly got Children Of The Grave down. Gotta clean up the little fill during the breakdown, but that's it so far. Such a fun song, and one of my favorites. Been meaning to learn it for years. I should have just transcribed it to standard and done it!

New shoulder inbound Friday. (Power tools applied to skeleton! Doom!) That's about all I got. Well, I am going to see Slift here in Cleveland in October. Now, that's for sure all I got.
I feel like this could also be progressive thrash ala-Voivod or Vektor? Or something like Fear Factory's digital/analog human hybrids? I don't know, one of the dystopian sci-fi themed bands. Though I guess it depends what sort of things are added to the skeleton. Is it some sort of cybernetic arm, or just regular old metal being crammed in there? Is it more pirate "wooden leg"-y, or is it more 6 Million Dollar Man "bigger, stronger, faster"?
Got my new new guitar strings in, after having snapped one Monday. Strung up just fine this time, now that I didn't completely botch it. And once again, this one required basically no adjustments. I had to slightly lower the action on two strings, but once I did that, intonation etc. was absolutely perfect. I'm astonished. Now, I just need to work on my guitar chops.
I'm thinking maybe I can learn some Iommi riffs to accompany the Geezer parts? Or at least, some of his rhythm parts. I make no bones about my inadequacies on guitar, but it's still fun to jam along with all sorts of distortion. Gotta find some simple stuff to learn and work on.
On a similar topic, I learned Highway To Hell on bass the other day in about 10 minutes. Knew it was easy, and just wanted something simple to give me a small sense of accomplishment. Mission accomplished!

The new SLIFT album is incredible. Somehow they still keep sounding like themselves while still stretching in all sorts of directions on each record.
ugh, new rb210 question
my headphone tone is perfect - octave fuzz - envelope - comp - flanger - hpf through the send and return on the back of the amp,
however when i'm playing through the amps speakers the octave fuzz and comp is really really loud in comparison to the envelope filter and comp?
wouldn't the headphone tone be representative of what is going to come out of the speakers in some way?
the joyo jmh-01 headphones do have extended frequency response
edit - i guess you can drive the hell out of the headphones without the pad, but the amp itself needs to have the pad to work with the stingray and all of the pedals
