Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm working on it, I promise! He also likes The Sword. Honestly, I don't listen to as much S/D as I should either... Maybe I'll put on some Orange Goblin or some such later and see what he thinks. The last few weeks I've been caught listening to stuff I haven't gotten around to in ages - or ever. The new phone allows me to store the entirety of my music collection, and seeing as how most of my listening takes place in the car, I'm listening to a lot of different stuff than usual.
Ayreon has been a new find - pretty much the Antithesis of S/D. Incredibly proggy, not terribly heavy, but wow - everything is so well done. It's easily my favorite prog band now, and I haven't even listened to his/their (it's a one man band with studio singers etc.) entire discography. Every album is basically a metal opera and is executed flawlessly. I want to sit down and just listen so I can absorb the stories more.
In S/D news, the Pharaoh Supremes continue to function fine, and are back on secondary bass and guitar boards. It's funny how small changes are such a big thing on some pedals - I basically kept the same settings I've had on them for years, but reversed the position of the Pre/Fuzz knobs. Now it's about 9:00 on Pre, and about 3:00 on fuzz. Diodes set to MOSFET (bass) and Silicon (guitar), with Tone at minimum and hi at maximum. Very "Russian", but without the scoop, or the high pitch cut. Certainly not as bright as either of my Pickle varieties, but the heft and presence of the Pharaoh is phenomenal. Just works in the mix so well. The Russian Pickle had more compressed bass, and the treble cut, and was smoother overall, but not quite the heft or tone. The Swollen Pickle was close, but not quite the feel I was going for (and it had minor changes too, to go back even closer to what it was years ago...). And the CMC Tall Font clone did a solid job, but ended up being a sort of mix of all of them - not quite as good as any of them in any regard, but also entirely workable if I wanted it.
I also tweaked my Rats on my secondary bass board, and have stuck with the Tremond over the Locust Star for now. The Volt Thrower is still my perfect Rat on the main board, though. It's phenomenal.
So the good news about all of this, besides loving the tones I'm getting, is that my Pharaohs seem to be just fine now. So that's two pedals I don't have to get fixed. Leaving me with only two pedals (three if I want to get another done, but it's not high on the list at ALL being a noise gate that I don't need/use) and my Bandit guitar amp to get fixed up. Woo! Maybe I'll grab some upgrades to the basses/guitars some time this year. If I can offload some stuff, it'll be tempting!

the broughton one control hpf is on the way, now i just have to source an affordable practice amp, which seems to be more challenging than i had initially anticipated it would be
I've been searching on and off for years for an old non-Goldline GK 210 cab for practice. Whether just the cab or as a Backline or RB combo, they are incredibly hard to find at a decent price. Good luck!

Then there’s Caveman, which is down near County-USC, but can easily gotten to by taking Huntington south out of Pasadena(if you’re coming from the north), as it then turns into Mission. Here’s their upgraded website, with stock listings…

That tone is absolutely filthy. It's one of those tones I can adore in a mix, but I don't think I'd ever be able to play through my rig. Bravo.
Probably old news to you fine folks here, but I boosted my Pharaoh with various Rat clones today. It was an excellent tone. In related news, I need to get back to actually playing and learning songs again and not just twiddling knobs on my pedals... But man - getting my Rats dialed in was fun, and now I have tones that can do doom and thrash equally well in the mix. That's usually a hard combo for me. Ended up keeping the Tremond on board #2, but only because it was a different awesome tone than board #1's Volt Thrower.
I also did likewise with many of my Muffs today. Man, it's fun messing with fuzz. Nothing changed here, as the Pharaoh Supreme continues to rock, and the Priestess is still on board #1. But it was fun messing with all the Muff variants.

just wanted to share that bootsy collins used sun amps, however he used them for their pristine clean tone when he was with james brown
Can't say I follow Bootsy's output besides knowing he's a living funk legend, but doesn't he also use absolutely filthy tones at times?
When he was with James Brown, flithy bass tone hadn't been invented yet.

I'm partial to a Tube Screamer into a muff. Rats are great and I love them with p-basses especially
Good week for my tone, bad week for my wallet. Happened upon two screaming deals I couldn't pass up, and ended up with another Locust Star AND another Volt Thrower clone. Decided to use them for different tones than the others, and they're both doing a more than serviceable fuzz tone for the moment. I think if I really needed to, I could cover all my dirt needs with enough copies of these "Rats". One of my critiques of the Blower Box Deluxe was that at my preferred settings, it was almost identical to my B3K/MBD-2 tones. I could probably do that with these clones as well! And I know they can do low gain as well as traditional "Rat" stuff. Really, I think the only thing they couldn't do would be my HM-2 duties, and right now, I'm not using any HM-2s. Pretty cool stuff.
Besides that, I've decided I need to start learning more stuff in Eb/D#. I've got plenty of standard songs, D standard songs, and even a few C standard songs, but only 3 in Eb. Gotta fix that. I know Sabbath's Dio stuff is often in Eb, as well as one of my favorite thrash bands, Tankard. Any other bands of note that have plenty of songs in Eb?

I think Cave In does, at least on Until Your Heart Stops. That could keep you busy for a while. Love me some Caleb Scoffield.

I vote Iceman. It's absolutely my favorite shape, and if I could score a 5 string bass or 7 string guitar version for a decent price, it'd be hard to say no.
