i'm excited about getting this done before lunch today, no room for the strobes where i'm shooting today

nikon z 8 body, maybe the 60mm 2.8 g macro or the 105mm 2.8 z macro if there's room, otherwise the 50mm 1.8 z

the godox round press flash bounced off the back wall to mix in with the diffused light from the windows

Any cool/famous guitars/basses?

I've spent the morning refreshing myself on some songs in C standard. Been a while. I think I'm going to have some more fun and learn a Dethklok song just because. I was proud the other day when I transposed two songs on the fly from a different bass with both a different tuning and different amount of strings. Maybe I'm somewhat more competent on this instrument than I think? Or maybe, just maybe, practice helps? Who'da thought?

Nice… that’s a proper camera. I started off with a Nikon kit but punted to Fuji to get out of the full frame funnel. Have a couple of the Godox lights too. Great stuff! Share some of the photos if you can!

Oof… would love to get a MF camera. Have a friend that only shoots Hasselblads and they’re just incredible. One of my guitarists just got a XV100 (latest one) and handed it off to some of his friends while we were playing last night.

shot a Rand and a custom Schecter today
stopped by perfect circuit after the photo shoot, but they didn't have the jhs bitcrusher yet so i couldn't compare it to the catalina bread one

I haven't listened to the single yet, but there's a lot of people unhappy with it.

Some say it doesn't sound like Sleep, just an "Al & Friends" band. Some are clearly just upset because Matt Pike isn't there anymore, regardless of the song itself.

OK, just gave it a listen and it's fine I guess? The first 2/3 anyway sound like a Sleep song, but if it was a blind listen I'd wonder about it a bit. Everything is a bit too clean. The guitars noticeably lack the sort of dirt/grit that have been on the last couple Sleep albums for sure. And I don't know if it's just the guitars bringing it through more, but vocals also seem a little to clean.
I'm not going to get up in arms over it, but I'm not going to pick up the vinyl until I hear more.

I've admittedly never been a huge Sleep fan (blasphemy in this thread, right?), but it didn't sound like Sleep to me. Not sure what it sounded like. It was okay overall, but probably not something I'll listen to a bunch. I won't turn it off if it came on, but I doubt I'd actively seek it out. But I do need to re-listen to my old High On Fire stuff...

I am a huge Sleep fan. It's weird not to hear Pike on a Sleep song. . .

There's a LOT of internet chatter about why/how stuff shook out that resulted in Matt no longer being part of Sleep. No idea what is true or not.

I've heard the new song about 7-8 times now. First spin I hated it. It has grown on me since. Not to the point I love it. I'll give the full record a shake for sure. If it doesn't click for me, it doesn't click.

For some people online, it is as if their parents got divorced. Lol

I love how everyone has their own assumptions about who is to blame, who contributed the most to the band, etc. It's clear now this is Al's baby, even if it wasn't before, it is now.

So in short, dig it. Or don't. Sleep isn't owed anything because you loved their past work, nor are they by default terrible now. If you have any interest, listen and make up your mind for yourself. Amazing how a lot of people seem to be forgetting that right now...

Don't those have an extra knob for gain? Could be good. I never felt like my old one needed it, but people used to mod them and add one in. Mine had that at one point but it was gone when I bought it. You might try asking an AMPEG club somewhere in vanilla TB.

What do you fine folks use for picks? And are there any helpful tips/tricks/videos that you can share? I'm trying to improve my technique this summer, and figure I could definitely improve my picking abilities, as I'm 95% or more a fingerstyle player. I've pretty much taught myself everything I know about using a pick, and feel like a little help may not be a bad thing. So far, my favorite picks are Tortex Jazz III XLs in 1mm and .88mm. Not sure which I prefer so far, but I'm thinking the .88 has a slight lead. It seems to have a little bit more give, so the pick isn't jerked out of my fingers as easily when I hit the strings, but still retains a good amount of attack. Of course, I like the tone of thicker picks slightly, and if the solution to not getting the pick pulled out of my fingers is improving technique (which it probably is...) I'd rather become a better player than lean on a crutch of sorts.

I also have my own hack from when I started to learn guitar (pick help here is also welcome, and I seem to prefer standard size Tortex Jazz III picks in the same thicknesses as mentioned before) where I apply Flex Seal (yes - an off-brand version of the infomercial product!) to the body of the pick and leave just the sharper half or so uncovered. It really helps me to keep a grip on the pick!

If anybody is interested in the methodology, I cover the tips of the picks with painter's tape, then just apply two coats of Flex Seal to each side of the pick, alternating sides and allowing it to dry between coats as well. Then I just peel of the painter's tape (sometimes using a knife to trim some excess Flex Seal that has penetrated somewhere I didn't want), grab the pick, and play. Works for me, at least!

Besides that, I learned Arch Enemy's Burning Angel tonight. Started on We Will Rise, but I need to work up to some more consistent speed to get my right hand back in shape, so ended up doing Burning Angel as it's a bit easier. That's actually what lead to my picking questions, as I had worn out my fingers, and figured I'd go for a pick to change up the muscles being used. But those are in even worse shape!

EDIT: Some quick googling tells me that I may want to try out some .73 or .6 picks. My biggest problem with picks is when they shift in my fingers, and that's why I think I prefer the .88s to the 1s currently. Any experience here with .73 or .6 picks? I'm worried there will be no attack with such a thin pick, especially since I use some thick strings on many of my basses (5 strings and down-tuned 4 strings). I'm also finding out there's a Tortex "Flex" which is a slightly more flexible take on Tortex. Maybe I stick with the .88s and try those? Worst case, I spend a few bucks and try a bunch of different picks out. They're cheap, thankfully.

Looks like an old guitarist friend left a pack of similar "brain" picks here ages ago. They're .73 and nylon, but we'll give them a shot!
