I would recommend getting a very inexpensive, but solid dual humbucker guitar and a set of GFS pickups. Most cheap import guitars like LTD EC or Ibanez Artist are decent enough apart from the electronics and GFS makes really good sounding pickups for not much money. It's pretty easy to get a good sound out of cheap guitar gear with a little effort. Have a tech install the new pickups and set it up for the tuning you want and you're good to go. You could probably get it done for less than a few hundred easy if you bargain hunt for a scratch and dent or slightly used guitar.

Could also look into a G&L Tribute. Great quality and can be had for very cheap used.

I'm amazed at the low-end and zero hum I get out of the neck pickup of my G&L ASAT. Its the G&L Telecaster knockoff with their MFD pickups. I loved the Tele twang sound and wanted one to inspire me to learn how to play guitar, and heard the G&L's cop it but add more "beef"... the internet was right. Neck pickup solo'd is like Tom Morello in a can.

Otherwise get a Les Paul like every other hard rock / doom band.

Edit: oh and its a Tribute, got it off eBay for around $400.

I wonder, does anyone remember Guyatone amps for guitars? I ask because their big thing was having a preamp -> a one tube super low power power amp -> a regular power amp section.

Supposedly this was for achieving power tube grind at any volume, then ramping up the acutal volume with the second power amp.

I was thinking about this type of amp topography for bass. I thought it would be very cool to be able to get a super low-output amp "head" (with pretubes and power tube), and be able to line out to a light weight power amp. That would get you all the tube appeal and save you about 70 pounds.

Does this beast already exist?

Also worth noting that GFS makes some good humbucker sized P90s. I had a Mean 90 in the neck position of one of my guitars before.

Look for Godin guitars, great quality and can be found super cheap. Canadian components built in the US.

I have a 80's plywood cort LP custom strung with dunlops. They are the official go to string for down tuning and not sucking. Plus just all around good. I do need a damn amp! I'm picky and trying to keep it cheap.

Use your Ampeg V4B with a pedal (or just crank it up). I know a lot of people that use that precise amp for guitar with a 2x12 or 4x12, with great results.

Oh I have, trust me. Just cranked it is ok but not great. And the only pedal that has sounded good with it is a old EHX hot tubes. Couldn't reach an agreement on price with the guy selling it and it's one of those things were no two sound alike.

Had one ages ago for bass and sold it when I got a MM Bongo. They did not play well together.

I may swap the pickups, GFS sounds promising and cheap. The guitar has these single coils under humbucker covers. But still may not fix the problem as I borrowed a real les Paul for a while and still no luck with my wacky setups other then with that hit tubes. And I have some really good guitar dirt boxes.

Have you tried your dirt pedals going to the effect in jack? (Assuming your amp has one.)

Peavey Butcher is cheap and would fit the guitar needs.

I've wanted a butcher ever since I played in a horror punk band back in the 90's and my name was "The Butcher" but yeah they are getting way too pricey. Guy in town was selling one for $475, he can eat a turd.

All the old sleepers are more expensive now. I bought a VTM120 for $200 (as part of a set of two, one of which I picked up for a friend) and I've kept that guitar amp over the years after selling Marshalls, Hiwatts and Mesas.

The Carvin X100B is a good tube guitar amp that you can still find for pretty cheap with some luck. That's my other keeper, got one for $300 and it's got a lot of versatility.
