This is really bizarre but very cool! Though I think you should use actual pickups instead of fake ones for the other two...

I agree. You've got the space and the routs for them why not have some more tone possibilities.

A beautiful job... You've created a very attractive instrument; if it actually had three pickups, wired in series, and a push-pull switch on one of the pots to enable a "neck pickup always on" mode (which gives you two additional PU combos--neck + bridge, and all three at once), I would seriously want to buy one.

I think you've all talked me into switching the faux pickups for the real thing. I'm a one sound kinda guy, but now I'm just too curious to leave it alone! Could I use a different cap value for the other tone control maybe? I'll have to study up on Strat wiring, I'm not quite sure how they're setup.

I guess I'll be on the lookout for a couple more '51 P bass pickups...

usurperbass, the middle pickup is a re-issue '51 Precision pickup and the others are fake, made of maple.

My next victim! I love the maple board neck on this bass. It actually plays better than the '78 Musicmaster neck. But the cheapo tuners will have to go. Hmmm... now to decide on a color. Definately nitro lacquer. I'm thinking Fiesta red...

Fatstrings, that was an awesome build. Very well executed. I was toying with the idea of building a strat-bass and was going to call it a Fatocaster but just never got around to it. Besides, yours came out better than mine ever would have. Great work A++.

Here, I flycut the blanks backside to have a smooth starting point. Would it have been easier if i had a surface planner? I'm not sure.

Have to say I like the fly cutting for surface planing idea....Seems a reasonable alternative. I can't get thicknessers wide enough that aren't going to take a lot of floor space. The portable ones always seem a couple of inches short of 12".

Last pics unless I get a special request. All in all, I'm very happy with the way this turned out. When I hold or play this bass, it really feels like it came from the factory. I think I'll like it even more when the nitro finish starts to show some wear.
