String Recycling Questionnaire

I use the alcohol soak trick to set get several uses out of a set of strings. Typically I get three passes: new from the package, soaked once, and soaked a second time. After that the windings are pretty beat up from contact with the frets, so I junk 'em.

As for recycling worn out strings, I have a box in my carport for scrap metal; when it's full I take it down to the junkyard. I just pitch the bass strings in there with the other scrap.

I sell my used strings on TB in bulk for $5-6 a set but over the last few years I brought them on 2 occasions to Cuba and donated them to local musicians.

Good luck, but with a new set of D'Addarios selling for $17.99 (xample) with cheaper options out there, I don't see how you could make it fly with the requisite shipping charges. Just IMO of course.

I recycle my strings about three times per set. I soak the set in acetone and when the windings get "deformed" by the frets I replace them. I would definitely be willing to send what's left in for recycling, because a rarely throw them in the trash. I have used old strings to "re-string" a few wind chimes.
