Do you need long scale or super long scale strings for thru body stringing with a Fender style headstock?

I know on my SS's I have to use D'addario mediums for the string through bridges. If that helps.

Long scale is ok. I have them on my FGN. 34", String through. Works fine. Plenty of length for wraps.

I'm a 2.5-3.5 wrap dude. A buddy showed me years ago to clip the string at about 2 tuning pegs' distance then insert/kink/wrap/tune. So if I was putting on the E string, I'd clip the string right over the D tuning peg. Of course, you hafta guess when you're doing the D and G strings, but it ends up being about 3.5" or so beyond the tuning peg you're working on. That gives me the perfect amount of string to achieve my desired post-wrappage.

The XL long scale strings gave me plenty of extra lead to achieve this. I think I usually end up snipping about 2-3" off the G string, and progressively more from the others.

I had to use superlong on my T40 due to the thru body stringing. Longs came up just a tiny bit short on the wrap at the nut.

Ordered the long scale.

D'Addario has changed its long scale bass strings to 37" winding length so I'm pretty sure that will fit for string thru.

Long scale is good for a FSO, but on a 5'er I never do string through - that defeats the tapered part of the B string.

Long scale for my PB. I still have to snip off 4” of the G string.

I use the width of my hand as a guide for this method. Just run the string over the peg... Lay my hand flat on the string past the peg... with my fingers perpendicular to the string. That's right about where it needs to be... Your mileage may vary.
Some people have narrow hands... Or like more wrap... Mine just happens to work for me.

I have a 2021 P and standard long scale fits fine. I doubt you’re using even 1/2” more string with the ferrules.

D'Addario "long scale" = 36 7/8" from ball end to taper = long enough for thru-body on a 34" scale Fender.

Really? My experience has been that D'Addario XL's long scale have been @ 37 1/8 inches. Of course, that's only a 1/4 inch difference to your experience, well within manufacturing tolerances.

According to the spec info on the D'A website, "long scale" is 36 7/8" ball end to taper. The 1/4" difference comes from how the winding length is measured. If you include the ball end itself by measuring from the very end of the string to the taper, it would be 37 1/8"; if you measure from the top of the ball to the taper, it would be 36 7/8", the latter being the measurement published by D'A.

By the way, the winding lengths published by GHS (32.75"/35.5"/37.25"/38") DO include the ball end itself.

I do exactly the same thing, except I do the kink before I do the insert. Two kinks, actually. I do that before clipping the string so there's no internal slippage.

You can see where to put the kinks if you look at a string you just took off the bass.
