I'm a 2.5-3.5 wrap dude. A buddy showed me years ago to clip the string at about 2 tuning pegs' distance then insert/kink/wrap/tune. So if I was putting on the E string, I'd clip the string right over the D tuning peg. Of course, you hafta guess when you're doing the D and G strings, but it ends up being about 3.5" or so beyond the tuning peg you're working on. That gives me the perfect amount of string to achieve my desired post-wrappage.
The XL long scale strings gave me plenty of extra lead to achieve this. I think I usually end up snipping about 2-3" off the G string, and progressively more from the others.
