Strings for a good growling punk tone?

I always had good luck with the Dean Markley SR 2000's, but only if you like round core rather than hex core strings.

I don't think SR2000s are round core. I could be wrong.

+1. Steve Jones' playing is so focused and tight on those recordings, it's incredible how young he was yet his studio playing is so mature. And he had great tone, on both guitar and bass.

How can anyone prove you wrong? For some people any string will do, for others they won't because they have a certain sound in their head they want for their bass and band.

I ONLY use Round-Core strings. I have the NPS strings on my Ric and the SR 2000's on my Jazz Bass.

That's cool man. I'm ready to be proven wrong but I've never heard of them being round core.

I use rotosound roundwounds, and they get that sound quite nicely. Playing with a pick really helps too. If you're playing with a p-bass, turn the tone knob all the way up.

With my P bass (D standard tuning) I get a great growl from Dr LoRider heavy gauge steels (50 - 110), especially when picking aggressively. They can give a nice growl with fingerpicking put you really need to dig in. LoRiders are more mid focused in tone. Recently I tried the La Bella Drop Down Tuning strings and they also have a great growl but have more bottom end. The LoRiders last a long time (I recently swapped a 1 year old set that had mellowed but still plenty of growl when played hard). I can't comment about longevity of the La Bellas as I only just put them on recently.

As for tone, you really need to try it with your gear. I get very different results with different basses played through my set up. My bass played through someone else's amp will sound different to their bass. And my set up will sound very different in different venues, so I generally have to tweak things for most gigs. There's a few venues we play regularly and I have taken photos of the settings with my mobile and then found out it still sounds different when the place is full compared with when there's few people.

Apparently you use hex core strings too because Dean Markley SR2000 are indeed hex core.
