That was my thought. In my very first gigging band, we played Journey's "Stone In Love," with the whole long guitar-solo outro, but the band had just the one guitar and no other chordal instruments. I learned the bass part, which is a pretty wide-ranging counter-melody to the guitar solo, and the guitarist told me he couldn't play it that way, because there weren't any roots under what he was doing. It bugged me, but he was right. These days, in a similar band, I just throw in a couple of the little licks Ross Valery played to signal it, but don't run all up the neck.
My band is learning "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" so I learned James Jamerson's part note for note. At rehearsal today our guitarist/vocalist said the bass line was throwing him off, lol. It is a strange line with a lot of 5ths and 3rds being played over the root chords. Just wondering if I should simplify it a bit and/or if anyone here has covered it and what they ended up playing?
FWIW, my band used to play that song, and we’re basically a 3-piece with a lead vocalist, and occasionally a sax. We killed it every time. It can be done. But if the will or the skill isn’t there, it will never sound right. This isn’t ordinary music we’re talking about here. Those original players and arrangers either had real schooling, or, as in Jamerson’s case, were extraordinarily gifted. Sometimes both.
As I've opined earlier, what dance crowd even wants to hear this song? It’s almost funereal.
I didn't realize that Stevie recorded it. I only know Marvin Gaye's hit version.I had a similar situation in a casual band playing the Jamerson line on How Sweet It Is. That band, unbelievably, had never even heard Stevie Wonder's recording, and were only familiar with James Taylor's recording. I won't tell you how that turned out.
Seriously, playing crap with crap players is not my idea of fun, but everyone's got their own standards (or not) I guess.I play with people that know how to play and also that appreciate the complexities of a seeming 'simple' tune.

I hear you. I have tons of fun with the musicians in the best bands I play with because everyone is good at what they do and nobody is taking themself too seriously to have a good time. But the music is the reason that whole thing happens and if that's not working, there's no point to it.I'm too old to play with hacks. I did it long enough and part of it was my fault for not trying to improve my own situation. I'd rather go to jams and do pickup gigs than be in a band unless it's a really good one and those are far a few between.
OP here: Just found out our one horn player quit the band due to "irreconcilable musical differences". Essentially he likes to rewrite the horn parts to make them "his own". Unfortunately that doesn't work with two other horn players if you want to keep things tight. Guess I could be a d*#k and do the same thing over this, but I'm more of a team player and this is a great band that play some really nice festivals plus everyone gets along really well.
With a lot of Jamerson stuff it is going to depend on the context of how you're trying to play the song.
Little late in the thread to ask, but since the OP is still engaged: Do the other band members (in particular the guitarist/vocalist getting confused) have a passable understanding of music theory? Are you even able to say "Yeah, the bass doesn't play the root on these chords in the original - I'm playing the 3 here, the 5 there, etc. I *could* play the root, but the overall harmonic balance won't be right anymore, unless someone else (keys?) moves a voice from the root to the degree that the bass was playing." ?
