I could go either way here. You don’t want to draw a line in the sand and cause the finished product to suffer because the fact is you’ve never performed in front of someone who knows the bass line.
Great song and in principle you’re correct in learning the part.
But you don’t want to play a train wreck. Not saying it would be your fault but rehearsal is the time to iron it out.
Maybe there’s a middle ground where you can trim a little closer to the root to accommodate the singer and guitarist?
I know, play it correctly or deconstruct it and make it your own, either way is OK with me but in the end you might me unhappy playing “down”. Maybe play the song for the group and walk through it a few measures at a time? Good luck.
