Studio monitors around $300

Looking for a pair of good studio monitors for a bedroom-sized setup. I don't need or expect a ton of bass, but I don't want to be guessing when I mix. Was hoping to spend around $300 and am willing to buy used or B-stock.

I'm looking for opinions about brand and model, but some advice about what size speaker I need would also be welcome. Room will be around 15' x 10'.

Is your room treated? Do you have Sound absorbing materials installed? ..... If not I would get the best type mixing headphones instead. I would wait on monitors until you can afford a better setup. You will do better with a good pair of studio monitors with a room that can handle true mixing.

I mix with headphones now. They create their own set of problems.

A lot of people say 8" monitors are too much for a small room. Thoughts?

I run Mackie HR824's (1st gen) and they do not have too much bass, in fact the opposite - they are just a little bass shy and I have learned to be mindful of that when mixing. My room is 10' x 16' and has moderate sound treatment (adequate).

I don't think an 8" driver is "too much", but others might. That's why Mackie offers a 6" version, for even less money.

for myself, I'm planning on setting up a 5.1 mixing room and I'll need a sub, which is likely to be 12" or maybe 15".

Mo' Bass is Mo' Betta!

My son has a pair of the Presonus Eris E8 XTs and they are excellent (XT are the more recent, better model of the Eris line). Great clarity and depth of field in the sound, smooth highs, and more—and more controlled—low end than many monitors in the price range.

To be clear, I am aware that they are over your price range. But I mention them for several reasons. First, they have several models with smaller low end drivers that are in your price range (https://www.guitarcenter.com/Presonus/Eris-E5-XT-High-Definition-2-Way-525-Nearfield-Studio-Monitor.gc?rNtt=presonus eris&index=4) and that have the same design to them, so might be equally awesome, but I haven’t used myself, so can’t recommend personally. Second, they are close enough to your price range that you might be able to find some used E8 XTs in your price range. Third, Presonus also has a subwoofer in the line that you could add later if you find it useful if you buy the 5.5 inch ones. And finally, they carry them at Guitar Center, which has a generous return policy. Monitors are a pretty personal thing, and having that would be helpful.

Hope this is useful to you!

Quick edit: the Eris are powered, and have several tone shaping switches and pots so you can adjust to your room and frequency response preferences. Nice eq points, and are really effective.

Adam T7V’s are a good buy for a couple of extra bucks

Right now I'm using Fluid C5 monitors.
They are in your price range.
My room's not treated, but I can set those speakers on that level so I don't get any deformations of sound caused by room. But also, they can be pretty laud.
Use reference track while recording and mixing, and I think you'll be fine for some time.

I picked up a pair of the JBL 305P MkII a few months ago to replace some cheapie Rockville monitors that were just too big for my new desk setup. They sound great and look great -- very even response and enough bass for me that I don't need a sub. And they run around $300 a pair. Highly recommended!

Came in here to recommend the exact same monitors. Can't go wrong with these for this price.

M-Audio BX5a are $150 each. Right at your budget and perfectly good. Used all the time in pro environments (among many others, of course).
