Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

a lady friend of mine was out and about and i called to see what she was up to...said she was running some errands so i asked her if she'd mind picking up some picks for me at a local music store (i use both picks and fingers)
she said she was at hastings and she actually saw some there, but couldn't remember there...i had her ask an employee and he showed her
since they had a rather slim, generic selection i had her read me off the thickness...i opted for the .70 and .76 mm, she made a statement about if i wanted her to stop off and buy a bass, too (of course i do, woman :)
overhearing i'm a bassist, i hear the employee in the background go "uh, tell your friend that he'll want something thicker for the bass...i play bass too and these are way too thin."
rarely am i an @$$, but i asked her to tell him that i'm sure that with my 8 years of playing i was pretty sure what pick size i like
oddly enough, i only got them as thick as i did b/c i have been playing my a/e bass more down here at school
just imagine if i was in the 'lectric bass mode and wanted them thinner...

Me, my friend and this one girl were hanging out the other day. My friend, who's a drummer, talked to me about how we should get a band going. So the girl butts in and goes:

"Hey, what do you play?"

"Bass"

"What's that?"

Then I make a deep sigh, but before I say anything, my friend answers the question for me, saying:

"A bass is that deep sounding guitar that keeps timing and holds the band together"

Then she goes:

"Oh... that's... cool i guess."

The moral of this story: don't let your drummer do the talking. :rollno:

Him: Dude, what's that?
Me: It's a five string bass
Him: Why do you need five strings?
Me: So I can have more notes then you
Him: but I've got all the notes you'd ever need on my four string
Me: So? I like five strings.
Him: But all you need is 4.
Me: I need five
Him: Why?
Me: Because I said I need five
Him: But Jaco only..
Me: (cutting him off) Mother****er, Jaco is Jaco but I am Thunderscreech the mighty ear****er, I SAY How many damn-ass strings I NEED. I NEED five, YOU need 4, because your underdeveloped brain can't count any higher then that!

fellow bass player:do you ever play with a pick man?
me:i usually switch on and off between pick and fingers half the time.
fellow bass player:ah nah man,you can't do that man, playing with picks is for p*****s,no,don't do that man.
me:yeah whatever thinking man.

ironically i go on this kid's myspace a few months after this happend,i go and look in his pictures, and i come to a picture, click on it.there he is with his bass.strumming with a pick....oh yeah man.definatly.playing bass with a pick is p*****S alright, definatly man.

the same kid also once had the nerve to tell me that his bass "is 10x better than" mine. even though he has never seen,or tried any of my basses...best bet is to not ask my opinion on this guy.

I'm kind of tired of hearing about "growl." I posted a thread about what people think it means, and everyone had a different answer. Many answers contradicted the others. It's kind of stupid. A dog growls. A bass has tone (which doesn't resemble a dog's). Once something becomes a cliche it ceases to have distinct meaning.

'That;s really quiet! I can't hear it!'

-- When I'm playing FOR MYSELF acoustically, and people come and stand gawking at me while I'm in the middle of screwing up Rush's 2112 :P

'That f*****s guitar is really loud and deep!'

-- Some random guy from my year while we were playing some random Velvet Revolver song (I forget which one... Maybe She Builds Quick Machines) at school...

'Your Jazz is so much better than your Yamaha...'

-- Yes, but I prefer the Yamaha, and the Jazz is broken ANYWAY! Gah!

And Lol, I used to be a Finger Nazi, but I went pick for a few weeks once and realised you get quite a cool tone for some songs, but fingers are more natural to me.

Um....

How about those guys who slap the same riff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over at Guitar Center while you're trying out a bass you want to buy? And they look at you the whole time like,"Yeah that's right. I can slap this all night long if I wanted to." Too bad it's all you can play and your pops have no sustain...

And tapping the opening riff from Bulls on Parade is not impressive. It's two notes.

Tapping on a bass is not really impressive either. It's how crappy guitarists solo.

But I agree with bassphreak. Don't tell me what I should play. I have what I have because I like it!

"hi im jeff berlin!"

"Jeff Berlin here"

"look at me, im Jeff Berlin"

the most un-modest bass player ever

(after reading a hell of alot of interviews from him, hes probably hell of a nice guy!!!)

Hahahaha! Subtle, no!

Sometimes I slap at those places, but I usually keep the volume down and try not to bother people. And I don't go on for that long.

It bothers me too!

I wouldn't say that about tapping. Some tapping is actually quite nice (if done correctly and with taste).

I'm not one for shred tapping, but taking classical music from the piano sometimes requires that you have a bit of extra range that only tapping can provide.

Crappy guitarists like Stanley Jordan? :D

Actually, you really can't get any more notes. There are only so many, even if you call C a B# or what have you. Unless your five string has an H somewhere in there. Oh wait, nevermind, just figured it out. Thats the real reason behind a 35" scale length.
