Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

Things I hate other bass players saying:

1) You have one of those ol' Fenders huh? (When I play my Jazz)
2) You should be playing a Fender bass (When I am playing my Peavey or Yamaha)
3) Why do you play a 5 string, Flea only plays 4 (I am not a bass player because I am not like Flea?)
4) You'd sound like a bass player more if you threw in some slap (because EVERY bass player should slap notes, no matter what music they are playing, right? and yes, I can play slap quite effectively, just never out of context)
5) You should listen to Victor Wooton to be a better bass player (take a hike, I will pick my own influences, not knocking Wooten's skill though)
6) a Peavey? Get a Precision (this from a music store owner who won't hang out with musicians who don't own Fender guitars or basses, he doesn't know I own a Jazz, yet another one of those Brand name elitists I met so many of, strange though, he hasn't played a gig in a good while, I have played quite a lot in the last few months... jerk)

I have heard all kinds.. I am sure I can go on for a good while with those.. *sigh*

and to add, I also get the "real bass players use a pick" or "real bass players use their fingers".. takes skill to do either or both.

Also, very funny on proving how EASY playing bass is.. I always get guitards up to play the bass when they say something like that, and 99% of the time, they make themselves look stupid. Once, the guitard figured he would get me back, and invited me up to play guitar. Little did he know that I am an accomplished guitar player as well, and nailed a few songs easily. Never heard from him again. HA!!!!!!

that was a wet one... that's always bad and lacks taste... oh wait, that's what I'm ...

seriously though..... my least favourite is "at least now you have a bass that you can use in any situation", as if the bass itself mattered more than my playing ;).

I was in a store (forget its name) in Manchester the other day trying out a jaguar bass, and a fellow bassist (who I'd heard a few minutes before asking about what amp he could get for his 'funk' band) walked by and literally said "you can't play bass with a pick". Bearing in mind this was a complete stranger, and he didn't even mutter under his breath, but just said it right as he walked past me, I was slightly peeved. I mean sure, I can and do play with a pick / plec / bit of plastic or whatever you want to call it - I can also play with my fingers like a 'proper' (according to this guy) bassist. But at that time I chose not to because I prefer one over the other.

Similarly I've been told that I "can't play a Chili Peppers song" with a pick..."Because it's sacrilege". Erm, you what? I CAN and DO, so what's your point? It might not be considered the norm, but dammit it's what I want to do, how I want to play and how I want to sound - I figure I'm going to be playing the thing for the rest of my life, I might as well do it how I like.

I've also been told by a 'fellow' bassist that he's better than me at bass because he can slap - now don't get me wrong, I love the sound, and it's something I'd like to be able to do properly one day, but I heard this guy play and, well, let's just say he wasn't all he made himself out to be. I'm still learning to play, heck everyone is - if you're still playing you're still learning and improving - so it's a style of playing I havn't gotten round to yet as I'm working on trying to read music and the whole theory side of things. But still...I don't understand why people need to make judgement calls on other people's skills and hobbies, just to inflate their own egos. Human nature I guess, but it sucks!

I only played with him once! Yet you had the guy's 12 song playlist with all the breaks down,. Then I come to find the guy you claimed you only played once with is the ONLY guy you play with.

Love it..
