This thread made me remember an incident from about 10 years ago.
One of the local(Houston)original music venues was celebrating its anniversery of the bars opening and had 7-10 bands playing that evening.A couple of bassist were checking out each others high end custom basses. I was tuning up my Jazz bass when I heard one of them start trashing Fender basses and saying how he could never get the tone he liked until he bought his custom bass.
After my band played, the guy he was talking to came to me and told me that he loved the tone of my old Fullerton era Jazz. The guy trashing Fenders proceeded to get on stage with his band and played "Cant get next to you" by Al Green,"Mustang Sally" and a bunch of blues and RnB covers. Most of which were recorded on,you guessed it,Fender basses.Funniest thing was,his tone was almost exactly like a Jazz bass.......
This post is not to trash high end basses.I would love to own a Ken Smith,Alembic,Fodera,Sadowsky,USA Lakland, and many others. But since I've never had the money for these,I've stuck with what I can afford.
I will have a Smith one day tho. When my wife lets me...
