Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

Really happened.

After a 4 hour cover gig a guy comes up to me as i am packing up and says

" Great drumming man "

I look nothing like our drummer and play bass.

I apologize for this not being about the bass, but I think yall will enjoy it.

I'm playing backup for a f*ckin VIRTUOSO mandolinist in a high school talent show about six years go. We're hanging out in a hallway a few minutes before we go on stage, and this girl walks by and says to him, "Oh cute! A baby guitar!"

hanging with my friends at one of their gigs, and the supporting band's bassist asks my buddy "what do you need all those knobs for? i just have the two!"

Criticising tone is a hit below the belt. I"ve worked to make mine to where I like it.

Funny, whenever my guitar player tells me he doesn't "like" my tone, I gently remind him that I don't like him.

Way to many armchair tone critics out there, and when it's one bass player bashing another, for any reason - lower quality gear, personal taste, etc. - it gets on my nerves.

Best response I've ever heard to this (not mine) was, "I did use flatwounds. What do you think I used to hang up our banner?".

No shot at flatwounds, I just thought it was a great response. I envy people who can either think on their feet that well or think up stuff like that in advance. I always wind up making some lame retort that lays an egg.

Yeah, I think that one is what I hate the most, since I use a pick most of the time on electric. I just tell them that since I also play upright, and can play it with a bow, as well as pizzicato, and can play an electric with a pick, my fingers or slap it with my thumb, I'm much more of a "real" bassist than they are.

There is no one correct right-hand method. The point is to lay down that bass line. How you go about causing the string to vibrate is up to you.

Criticism of my gear is pretty annoying, too. I honestly couldn't possibly care less if some random dude thinks I should play a Fender P-bass. I'll play what I damn well please.
