Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

Here is one i heard from another bassist.

"Bassist that don't know how to tap or sweep suck", the kid thinks he is great because he can all of Protest the Hero's songs.

Yep, those tapping/sweeping bassists are just stealing all the gigs away from us fingerstyle guys out there, aren't they? Oh brother.

OTOH if he means tapping a keg and sweeping the floor, then yes those guys can probably land some work.

from a bassist to be....

last night at "band practice" (if you can call it that..) my friend said he found a bass he is going to buy. Its 500$, he knew nothing about the bass at all besides it was 500$... and then says "I'm going to play bass because its easier to master a song... you know 'cause there are only like lets say 11 notes per song and well on guitar its a lot more."

*shakes head*

Him: Dang, Vai's a great basist, i mean really!
Me: Basist?...
Him: Ye, you know.. Metallicas basist?
Me: Oh right! Now i know, ye hes cool! *oh i love jackasses*
He walks away and says: "Cya later, stage time!" with a big smile.

Oh the thrill <3

That was rather weird...

Actually, you really can't get any more notes. There are only so many, even if you call C a B# or what have you. Unless your five string has an H somewhere in there. Oh wait, nevermind, just figured it out. Thats the real reason behind a 35" scale length.

I have an extra few notes on the Low B, so I can fret an E and a few others. It makes playing so much more the easy some times.

PLUS: Low B + Fuzz = :D

I hate portentous arrogant bass players who look down at me for not knowing EVERYTHING about bass playing or know EVERY great bass player in the world

+1,000,000

I don't know a hell of a lot about famous bass players, like the ones everyone talks about, Jaco, etc. I tend to make up or try and be as different as I can on bass.

To keep my post on topic -

So after a show I go outside for a smoke, I talk to some randoms that are also smoking -

Me - It's pretty cold out tonight.
Them - Yeah it is, did you see the band?
Me - *sigh* Yeah I was playing and you guys were stood about ten feet away.
Them - Oh...sorry...

Anyone else feel invisible on stage?

1.)
commenting upon a many-times "transcribed-higher-due-to-singer´s-range" bass-line (never going below the C on g-string) on "Never Can Say Goodbye"

me: "the bass might be better playing an octave lower, thus supporting the low end..."

bassist: "whoa, I never thought of it, but I think you´re right. I just went with whatever it said on the sheets..." (obviously a transcribing error)

(advice: use your ears, maybe...)

2.)
before our set: -"oh, you use Hartke... :rollno:Ampeg is better..."

after our set, theirs coming up next: -"man, would you mind me borrowing your rig for our set...?"

(advice: don´t trust blindly what some might say, check out 4.5XL´s before bashing them)

3.)
-"you need to boost your low-mids" (as a cure-all answer to any problem)

4.)
"fretless is for jazz..."

(umm, okay...)

Ive been jamming with my 16 year old brother for the past year, so he brings his friends who are, well 15-16 range, over and I get alot of "Fieldy is the best bassist ever!! Can you play any Korn?!?" :scowl: Then after we've played for about an hour, "Wow your almost/are better then Fieldy!" :rollno: I hate my brothers generation sometimes...

Eeep. I'm 18 and part of that generation most reluctantly, there are scarcely things that irritate me more...drummer in an old band of mine heard me play some slap shizz one day and nearly had a heart attack "whoah! Slap bass!! That's like...whoah!!" I was like "umm...thanks...:hmm:"

A guy at a party where I was jamming the other night told me "wicked bass playing man! It was so fast!" Best part is I was playing this bass that felt like a tree, and was playing some super-simple groove as I was far too drunk to play anything technical ha...

"Whats the point of bass?" , hate that one.

"Do you not do any of that slapping", I'm in a progmetal band it would sound a little silly.

Words from a drummer friends: "Timing is the key to being a great bass player, being subtle and knowing when not to play. Also playing just before or after a beat you can control the whole rythm". Does he think I'm some kind of idiot!

The most annoying is catching someones eye after a gig and they do an air bass, and I just stand there pretending to laugh with a big dumb smile on my face

Not a bassist, but I was at a pub a few weeks back and, whilst chatting with my guitarist about technique and stuff, a girl we were with came out with this classic:-

"Why would you want to practise?. I mean. you guys have a CD and gig all the time, surely that means your good enough"!!!

Fair enough she's a non-instrumentalist but....I was lost for words on that one!!!

While not entirely fitting to the thread, a couple of incidents that left infuriated/confuzzled me.

1) While playing a small club gig in Hawaii (back when I was playing (badly) regularly) I stepped away from the stage to grab a drink at the bar. The bassist from the previous group and my own freakin guitarist walked over and started dropping everything but the bass on the eq.

The other one is not specific to bass, but applicable to any instrument.

2) While practicing my drumming (back when I actually wanted to be a drummer) another drumer asks, "Why don't you play like Bonham?" I replied, "Because I'd rather play like me."
He stood up and walked away shaking his head in disgust.

/sigh
