Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

I used to work with a guy that played bass and i was telling him about how stoked i was with my new G&L SB-2 as i needed another more 4 string and he's looked at me and unleashed this beauty

"oh, it must've been old stock or something, no one makes 4 string basses anymore, they are all 5 string now"

oh dear....

There was another time where i felt really embarrissed, i was trying out a warwick thumb NT 5 string, first 5 string i've ever played at a bass shop through a Trace elliot head & stack. I'm just playing along with a few riffs and the sales guy got really excited "dude that sounds awesome, it's got this cool octave sound going" which i hadn't even noticed was because i wasn't fully muting the B string...

Guitarist: "It's a G."
Me: "A G7, Gmaj7, or Gm."
Guitarist: "Just play the root and stay there."

Fortunately things have gotten better between us.

this is both guitarists in my band. then one will say, "what's it matter if it's any of those weird things you said that i can't understand because my fragile brain is unable to process that there may be different kinds of g chords."

then i say, "well, i guess it doesn't. let's try it your way."

one (or both) proceed to strum Am chords while i play an A major arpeggio.

one of them will say, "Ew."

and i respond, "well, that's why it matters, dumb@ss."

i have never ever ever had a drunk person come up to me after a show and try to fondle my gear... until recently. pretty good exchange.

them - "hi, i'm jack hoff, i play bass for this punk band"
me - "oh cool. got any shows coming up?" (i hate punk music)
them - what kinda bass is that? can i see it?"
(just picks it up)
me - "well, i guess so... it's a spector"
them - "wow. i just got an ibanez. cost like 500 bucks. i thought it was kinda outrageous, but it was worth it, i guess. how much did this beast cost?"
me - "well, i got it used for a grand... they go for 18 new..."
them - "oh... i should probably put this down now..."
me - "yea, i'd like that"

i dunno. sometimes people suck...

You should be thankful that he had the decency to put it down before he broke it...

You should be thankful that he had the decency to put it down before he broke it...

thus the phrase "pretty good exchange" :smug:

i was scared when he picked it up. i mean, it's no sadowsky or a us spector but i mean... it's mine... and it wasn't what i'd call cheap.

haha, i forgot to mention, my band tunes drop c, and he was all confused by it. haha. little things...

Yer theres a thread about non bassists, so thought why not other bassists.
for me theres this guy whos relly up himself round me and the other day he challenged me, he sed he could slap faster than me.
Now i dont like to compete in music but hes generally a tool anyway. He did the classic "play higher ground as fast as you can" now since i dont practice higher ground 24/7 like him i cant play that faster, so i did another thing. He said he could do it faster and played higher ground again. so i sed, "can u play anything else?"

the look on his face was hilarious.

so any bassist hates?

When someone says "I just play bass." Or something like that.

I was talking to another student and a friend of mine at school the other day. We were both in class, he has his upright (and plays a 5 string) and I had my precious Lakland (yum!).

We were talking about basses (what else?) and the subject of ERB's came up.

I was saying that some day I would get a 7 maybe so that I could have the oppotunity to try it out. He kept telling asking me "Whats the point? thats not really a bass then."

I HATE that! A bass is a bass is a bass. The number of strings doesn't matter. Should I tell a guitar player with a 12 string guitar to play a lute instead just because of the number of strings?

I told him it was so that I could experiment with chords and try all sorts on new things that aren't possible from a range perspective on a typical 4 string.

BLAH!!!!!

Oh, and when I was in grade 10, I joined jazz band at my school and the first thing I get from the guitar player is criticism about my gear.

He is this guy who can play alright, but he keeps getting all this nice, expensive gear whenever he wants for no reason at all on his parents money and he doesn't work.

I was working and I had to pay for everything myself. Thats why I had my Brice HXB-406 and I loved it.

Here is the exchange:

Him: "Hey. you should get a jazz bass."
Me: Why?
Him: "because they are awesome. I've never heard of what you're playing."
Me: So? This is a good bass and I can't currently justify spending more money than I have on gear I don't need. If your happy with your gear, then thats cool. I just can't drop my money like you did on your parker fly.
Him: Why don't you just get your dad to pay for it?
Me: I can't just ask for new gear. I have to have a reason.
Him: No you don't. Just ask and you should get.....

It went on like that and he just didn't seem to get it.

ARRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Wella, I come back with the same good ole' question: why blaming guitarrists? I mean the real ones. In fact, I believe you can drive a car each monday and a bike tuesdays and fridays, ok? You can play piano and harpsichord (Keith Jarett, e.g.). You can cook vegetables and pork. You can also paint and make hand pottery, am I right?

I don't mean "the stupid guy who plays guitar since last year and thinks that if he knows ten chords on the 6-strings he can manage the 4-strings". I mean the real musician who is a pianist when he plays piano, a guitarist when he plays guitar and a bassist when he plays the bass... Well, what's wrong with this kind of musicians? I played hard rock in the early '80's as a guitarist, then I played bass guitars in another band, then I played blues guitar with the third band, then I played jazz bass with the fourth... Is it something wrong?

When all another bassist talks about is their bass heroes of the past, how they've been practicing such-and-such a song by them for the past six months, and tries to tell me that I should work on the same stuff because their heroes played it forty years ago. Why should I care if I can play XXXX song when I'm not getting paid for it, I don't like it, and it's not going to help me with learning the instrument in a somewhat steady manner? Why not work on reading lots of different music, improving my technique and feel, and learning a reasonable amount of theory instead?

I try to play like me. I work on getting better every day. If that's not good enough for 'em, too bad. :spit:

Being a Shredder (and six stringer), i get alot of "two hand tapping is for people who aren't competent with finger style" "Or, Shredding is for people who can't hold a groove". Of course, then I do a Rocco Prestia 16th note groove. They shut up real quick

For sure the best is "you use three fingers because you aren't good enough to use two" Rivaled only by guitarists "you have six strings. So you think you're better than me?" XD

Or theres always "Guy that doesn't exactly know how basses are built but likes to sound like he does" This amazing player i know always talks about "neck thorough" basses. And about how the less pieces you have to your neck the stronger it is.... *sigh*

@trb
Haha. You should tell those @$$ hats about Garrison with his T I M R style of picking or any pro who can crush worlds with a 4-finger picking style (especially if they use their pinky!) and then ask them if they can do the same with their "superior 2 finger skill" they so claim to have. Nothing against 2 fingers... I use I M I M most of the time. :D

@JazzV
Yea, those are the same guys who have no musical identity and don't have any interest in developing one. The best they can do is play someone else's songs just like that someone else. Totally agreed with you. I remember a recent BP article where Rocco said, "If you can't play it like you, then it means nothing." :bassist:

@Cip
There is nothing wrong with guitarists. BUT, the guitard to guitarist ratio is looking every so horrible these days. With people sucked up into over glorified American trends which are truly below standard, most of these guys spawn out of safeway/borders/B&N mag sections as guitards claiming to be guitarists. My drummer buddy and I went to borders the other day and it took FOREVER to find a BP and Modern Drummer amidst the plethora of guitar magazines. :spit: Not to mention the fact that I finally found a Bass Grimoire behind 6 DIFFERENT versions of The Guitar Tab White Pages. :rollno:
