Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

at a show;
bass player at my school: dude you playing is great but its to roundy warmy thumpy barky, it sounds like a kick in the pants its to BRBRBRBRBR (making sound with lips), why don't you cut your mids? thats how i get a good sound
me to myself: thats exactly how i want to sound, and anyway your idea of good tone is a wah pedal maxed out through a big muff (not always a bad thing), i'll keep up what i'm doing
Me out loud: sure i'll think about it (i'm a bass player! im the mellow one remember?)

Luckily, there are five really cool bassists at my school, and four of us are in the school's musical. The crazy one and I are in the show singing (except he can't sing, I think he's tone deaf), another in the sound booth, and another one is playing bass for the actual music of the show.

A former drummer of mine had a younger brother (singer) who came to our practice place with his band to jam out so we could check them out. Before they started the bass player handed his bass to the guitar player. I gave him the "what are you doing ?" look. He smiled and told me: " He tunes my bass for me, I don't know how."!!!:scowl:

:O

A fellow bassist at my school always complains that I'm lucky because "I was born with fast fingers"....I can tell how much he practices..

I really hate that my lead guitar thinks he can play bass, I know that it doesn't really fit cause he's not a bassist but what ever.

*he starts playing my bass by pulling on the strings as high as they go and then letting them go*

Me: Dude, thats a horrible way to play bass.

Him:Well, it's the way I play bass.

no it's not, you idiot, your a horrible bassist.

Him:I play bass all the time.

Me:You don't have a bass.

Him:Well, it's just the first four stings. (of a guitar)

no it's not, I hate you.

But whatever, he's still a cool.:smug:

went to a show last summer, and some punk band was playing...the bassist was usin a Digitech Whammy, and a GK diesel dawg overdrive...i didnt notice the pedals, as they were beside his amp, on the side i couldnt see, and i asked him...

me: "nice sound man, what kinda overdrive to you use?"

bassist: "Overdrive?...wudda you mean, overdrive?"

:eyebrow:

ive never come across anyone who knows what theyre doing that can stand to play on dead strings..

Are you serious? I've read tons of stories of bassists (incredibly talented bassists at that) who prefer the sound of dead strings over super bright strings and go as far as smearing chicken grease on the strings to deaden them (bassist in the Dap Kings for example).

I myself hate twangy, super bright bass tones.

"I don't really know what those knobs on my amp do, I just let the band take care of that..."

"TWO pickups? TWO basses?!? WHY?!?"

I got two; first the next guy up at an open mic who I stop from plugging his line into an AC plug strip thinking it's a DI. "Oh, I usually have my roadies do that for me" Second; And my favorite, Two pretty very pretty women walk up to me as I'm just rolling in my rig at the beginning of the night, and ask "could you turn it down" To which my reply was "But I haven't set up yet" They responded "But you LOOK loud!" I love what I do, yes indeed.

Hrm...I had two comments that stick out to me:

'All bass players need to sing. You need to start singing' - You don't want to put a mic in front of me... :)

'You sound good, but playing with a pick is holding you back. You need to learn to play with your fingers.' - No, seeing as how I only have three fingers on my picking hand, I'm doing just fine with a pick, thank you.
