I actually like a lot of Jaco's stuff but I have to admit I do get pretty sick of hearing about him all of the time.
other than that, any ERB, pick, or effects bashing tends to annoy me.

Yup. A pretty boring unlistenable song imo.
I actually like a lot of Jaco's stuff but I have to admit I do get pretty sick of hearing about him all of the time.
other than that, any ERB, pick, or effects bashing tends to annoy me.

Before playing....
after the set:
"Wow I never would have thought that bass could sound like that, but you really should look at getting a better one.."
Wow I never thought of that. Buying a new bass? What a concept! I swear I've never met a bass player who is completely satisfied with the gear they have. It's like asking an alcoholic if he wants another drink. You want a new bass? Yes please.

It's like being an artist and not knowing who Picasso, Rembrandt, or Michaelangelo are. You may not be a fan of their style, but you should at least know who the pioneers of your craft are.

Him: "Tom, if you want to play rock and blues you have to play with a pick."
Me: looks at him
Him: "Really, you have to, and you can make it sound like you're playing fingerstyle."
Me: Thinks to myself "***?"
Though, I must say, playing my G&L with Sadowsky flats is one of the coolest sounds I've ever made.

And I hate to hear other bassplayers play lousy riffs in the music store when I'm trying out an unamplified bass and the cabin is right behind me. I have a sneaking suspicion that the guy was in fact...a guitar-player!!!!
You are, in all likelihood, correct.
I find this interesting, too. Why is it that two bassists can stand side by side and try out equipment and, as a general rule, not bother each other? But if a guitarist starts playing on the other side of the store, both bassists get annoyed

No i've heard of bach and beethoven before jaco because they have had a larger impact on music as a whole, you can't argue with that i'm sorry but that is a fact. Bach, beethoven and composers like them have literally shaped and influenced music to what it is nowadays for various instruments and genres. Almost everybody has heard of them, now go up to a random person and ask em who jaco is.
Yes know them, be influenced by them but the fact that you don't know of them DOES NOT make you any less of a player. I can't stand about hearing about bassists who make such a big $h!t about him (not that he doesn't deserve it) and then complaining about bassists who don't know of him.
For example I know of Jaco, I see what he did but there are bassists that have never heard of him that can play circles around me, in terms of jamming understanding of music and overall skill in general.
So if you find a bassist who doesn't know who Jaco is don't instantly judge and do this

When I meet a young player, or anyone for that matter who has more than a passing interest in music, I always mention Jaco when the conversation turns to bass playing. Jaco redefined the role of the bass in modern music. He definitely derserves his place in the upper echelon of the music world. If someone is not familiar with Jaco I do not think of them as a useless moron nor do instantly pass judgement on them.
Until just a couple of years ago I was not familiar with a bassist by the name of Steve Swallow. Steve Swallow invokes the same response from that Jaco does from the musical community - he is a bass God to many, myself included since someone enlightened me about him.
I watched your videos by the way........ nice technique and I was impressed!

LOL!!! Well I'm glad it's not just me. Honestly some sap is paying more for a black squire p-bass with a red bat above the pick guard.

LOL I went out with that girl for two months. She learned not to bring bad bassists into our conversations
