Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

I played a gig a coupla nights ago, and two guys in the house came up to me and were blown away, saying, "DUDE! YOU'RE A MONSTER SHREDDER!!" And apparently (according to their designated driver) monster shredder is the highest compliment these two can dish out.

I'm trying to decide if Monster Shredder is a compliment or a slap in the face.

Could mean your wicked with a Veg-O-Matic.
Or you had the last word in an argumet with Godzilla.

Compliments either way.

But on bass, yeah, there's room for interpretation.

basically anything unjustly negative. i always hear people talking **** about other bands they played with or famous bands they've never even met, but rant about how terrible they are. its just sad to see people putting so much energy into negativity. the whole "competition" thing is disappointing too.

Bass is easy, this bassist is better than that bassist, if you can slap you are good, if you use a pick you suck, etc... I hate guitarists who think they can play bass. I also hate soundmen and engineers that turn the instrument down so all you hear are the lowest sub-frequencies (or nothing at all). What a bunch of idiots. God, that felt good.

sitting there playing a P-Bass rather well, since ive been playing about 5-6 years now. and this chick that keeps playing the same crappy slap riff walks by and says "Oh, P-Bass, those are really good!" thanks. kinda own one and im playing this one for a while. then she said some random crap about hating Jazz basses and i think i tuned her out from then on and went back to the P.

"There's no need for (volume to be that loud, cabs and amps to be that big, etc...)"

This is usually said when somebody posts something that isn't a 5 pound amp and tiny single speaker cab. It's like some people can't believe that anyone can prefer old, large heavy gear over all this new lightweight stuff. Anyways, I decide what's needed. The sound and volume fit my band and my tastes and that's all that matters. More power to you for enjoying your lightweight amps and cabs, but I'll stick with my mountain...;)

"Instead of tuning to drop C on your 4 string, just go buy a 5 and play in standard"
(bonus points if they suggest in some way that drop tunings = a less skilled musician)

:spit::spit::spit:

I want to dropkick babies in their soft heads when I see this.

For certain styles of music, the "go buy a 5 and play in standard" approach won't work. Drop tunings make things easier, reaches that would be completely impractical, and things like that. I don't know if it makes me a less skilled musician or anything, but it helps out in a band setting to just tune to the guitars. Can't see anything wrong with making things easier for everyone. *shrugs*

I tune to drop B on my four strings and all I need to say as far as tone, is that a 135 tuned to B sounds nothing like a 110.

It's pretty rediculous anyways to say.."hey, instead of paying for new, larger strings, just go spend several hundred more on a bass". :rollno:

"OMG DO YOU LIKE PETE WENTZ?"

"OMG DO YOU LIKE..."

*this is where I swiftly remove the offenders head with a gnarly uppercut.*

I don't know, that's all that came to mind right now. I don't really get into much bass talk outside of TB. ha

Anyways, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! HAIL SATAN... uhhhmm... I mean...SANTA! :D

"I couldn't hear you up there!"

Though I hate hearing this mostly because they're probably right and I should have been louder.

I don't know too many dumb bassists (referring to most of the things that have been posted) but I don't know many so that can't be accurate.

Why don't you play a (4, 5, 6, 7, or 12) string? So and so does...

No matter what string configuration I play, someone always thinks I should have 1 more string or one less string.

It pretty much never fails.

"real bassists use fingers"

no you moron: real bassists use both

I would argue against this. Real bassists (although it's definitely a good idea to know both) use whichever fits what they want to play. For me, that is almost exclusively fingers. That being said, I would never stoop to saying "real bassists use fingers" because I have equal respect for people who do pick.

I notice there's a 5 string headstock in your avatar. Why isnt there a 4 string headstock in your avatar? That's what Jaco played...

Some of the pearls heard on the way ....

1) I'm left handed, but play as right handed. Sometimes people ask me "Why don't you play like a left handed ?"

I answer : When you don't know how to play, you suck in both ways ! So , I learned on the easier and cheaper way to find instruments.

2) Why someone choose to play bass , since it is a instrument that you can't play alone ?

3) Once in a show , I was with a 6 string bass and a guy said : "Too many strings".

4) Jaco only needs 4 strings, why do you need more ?

"You play bass?" - proceeds to pick it up with out asking and banging on it, which is followed by a futile attemtp to place it back on its stand. It then falls to the ground, acquiring a new dent/scratch/chip.
"It's a cheap bass anyway. It's not like it's expensive, you shouldn't even get mad. I mean it's a Gio its a piece of crap"

God I hate it when people touch my things, break them, and then tell me how it's my fault for buying cheap stuff... I'm poor you a$$hat. My parents don't buy me everything in the world.
