I used to play this tune with Pat Moran...I think she was the one that told me that Harry wrote the words.

Oscar Levant was one of my heros. His pill-popping chops were second to none. I have a couple books about him. He was a piece of work! Funnier than ****.
Herb helped write one of my favorites along with John Frigo and Dick Marx..... a trio from Chicago called "The Soft Winds". The tune "Detour" I love the Evans/LaFaro rendition


Dono, It just came to me!!!!!Early Autumn....You clever devil, another autumn tune as well
The lyrics are on the way!!

Really....I always see Ellis and Frigo getting credit.....Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing Carter and Ellis. I always wondered if the Carter was Benny!
Thanks for clearing that up for me my dear.....Did Lou write any other tunes that would be worth mentioning?

Thats right! I got Detour and Blame It On My Youth mixed up becuz my young whippahsnappah ears only heard it for the first time on a more recent Kurt Elling CD where both songs are on it. Kewl. I'll have to check out this Oscar Levant fellow.

Damn PIZZLE WARBURTIZZLE, how do you keep all these lyrics in your head? I hope that it hasn't been by listening to too many bad singers burning those lyrics into your mind. :)

With the highest respect, I hope my memory is half as good as yours when I get to your 'vintage'. :)

diddy, i'm afraid alot of years of playing with singers, both good and bad, has given me the chance to hear all the lyrics to these tunes. Also, when you're " Young and Foolish" ( good name for a good tune ) you tend to put yourself in the picture that the lyrics describe....as Dono said.
So I seem to remember certain tunes connected to certain relationships that were going on when I was playing certain gigs......

Lou Carter has written alot of stuff, but Detour might be the best known. I'll send you copies of some others in Lou's own hand. "Skyline" has some great structure.
Incidentally, Lou says he's never seen Detour published with all the right changes.

I had a little help from singer/bassist Jim Ferguson on this one.
His CD, Not Just Another Pretty Bass is chucked full of great tunes including Blame It on My Youth and Autumn Seranade.
Some great tenor solos by Chris Potter and some great Red Mitchell inspired bass solos as well. A couple tunes by one of my favorite composers Alec Wilder....South To A Warmer Place and While We're Young, plus a couple great Hoagy Tunes round out the program!!

When an early autumn walks the land
and chills the breeze, and touchs with her hand the summer trees
perhaps you'll understand what memories I own.
There's a dance pavillion in the rain, all shutterd down
A winding country lane, (I CAN"T GET THIS LINE)
A frosty window pane, shows me a town grown lonely.

I used to do Skyline with Richie Cole!
What does Lou think of Bills changes on Detour??

I didn't know anyone knew about Skyline. The complete chords and voicings are so important, it screams to be played on piano.

Is this the chick that has that Mother of a bass player? Trey something? I heard him on that morning jazz show Parlocha? Trey Henry...is that his name? This was like a really big band thing with outside sections for the soloists.....This guy was brilliant!!!

That's the one,Trey Henry. The whole band she had was terrific although I was disappointed in the guitar playing, it was played accoustically and it just didn't sound right in the mix. The solos were OK but it sounded like he was in a different county from the rest of the band. The piano playing sounded like a cross between Bill Evans and Manfredofest (Brazil 66).
