so i finally received my set of circle k strings in the mail!
exciting stuff yes, until i managed to do this to the .158 :crying:(see picture)
i can only assume ill have to order another single to replace it, but my real question is is this salvageable at all? cause im cheap

i cut it shorter than i shouldve..a noobish miscalculation i know. as a result, i ran out of thin tapered section to wind around the tuning peg, and once it got to the thicker part, a snap and a crackle later i ended up with what you see in the picture

i wish i could say yes but its not even close, guess ill be putting in that order tomorrow!

That's not caused by cutting it too short, that's caused by the string being too long for your bass.

Yes.

Did you order the 'standard' length for a 34" /35" scale?

Very beautiful string with a huge outer wrap, just as it should be.
It doesn't look cut too short, I only wind thick strings around the post 2 times maximum.

This is precisely what happened
I put in an order for the replacement yesterday night :bassist:

I'm just taking the damn thing to the local shop to get it restrung and setup this time around. I've got a horrible track record as far as instrument maintenance and just generally fixing things goes. I'll probably spend less money in the end like this.

I haven't tried to bring it to pitch due to the fact that I broke the string the same exact way last time, i.e. the tapered section hitting the post. It broke as I was trying to bring it to pitch before

I suggested I'd spring for the replacement and you beat me to the punch by purchasing it. Try bringing this one up to pitch - slowly - and see where the intonation point falls. I will replace it if it fails.

How much beyond the tangent point on the post does the taper extend beyond?

Somehow I missed that part of the post...shame on me. I very much appreciate the offer. In all my experiences with forums noone has been near as helpful as you.
Just so I can be sure that I give you the correct answer, how do you identify the intonation point?
And by tangent point I assume you mean where the string meets the tuning post?

Offer still stands - if this string can be made to work I'll refund you the purchase price. If it doesn't but a remedy can be arrived at I'll send you a replacement.

The correct intonation point would be where the saddle sits when intonation is right - it varies by manufacturer and string size, but it needs to be brought to pitch in order to find it.

And yes, the tangent point is where the string makes initial contact with the tuning post.

Well thankfully I had much better luck bringing it to pitch this time around :D
doing it slowly as you suggested seems to have done the trick..
Haven't done the setup yet but intonation is nearly correct as is.
And the tangent point is just barely into the section of string which measures .75" according to your string spec chart
Not sure what I did different this time but the tangent point with the first string that failed was about 1/4" into the thickest part of the string
