Stupid things you've done as a bass player?

-Waiting too late to pickup music (been playing 12 months, gigging 5 now)

-Drinking too much before going on (hey that was last weekend :rollno:)

-Not practicing the songs enough (um.. last weekend again..)

-Not standing up for myself often enough. No putting the PA 2 ft behind my head IS NOT acceptable, yes I do need more than 6 inches of space to play, no I cannot play with my bass headstock out the door.., yes I do actually need to hear myself

-Playing very very badly at gigs because of all of the above and not sticking up for myself

Defining a problem is half of its solution. :)

My lost years between 11 and 16 when I let my poor bass sit unloved in my closet and played my mums guitar. When I think of all the things I have learnt in the last 3 years of playing I shudder to think about what I missed in those 4 years.

Picking up violin in 4th grade instead of bass... because my older sister played violin. Was "concertmaster" (first seat) on violin through high school. Then dropped it to play guitar.

Didn't start playing bass until five years ago... because my son picked up bass in 4th grade. I still confuse bass and treble clef when reading music.

I am now 49 but I plan to play bass until I can't stand any more.

Boning the singer - been there, wasn't too bad...

Dumbest was, after helping the drummer (fantastic drummer and good guy) load out, I drove home with his keys. I lived 60 min from the gig, as did he. This was before cell phones. I got home at 3:30 am to an answering machine message "hey bro, you left with my keys"... Loaded the dogs into the car to keep me company and drove back out to the club to get him his keys. Got home close to 6 am...

-getting GAS to early in life...
-forgetting what key i was in while playing 12 bar blues...
-falling asleep on stage.
-Carrying a large umbrella with a concrete base while holding my jazz bass in one hand- broke my toe cause of that one...
-trying to show off to some ladies at a gig...breaking 2 strings in 30 seconds...
-trying to play and smoke a cigar...
-Playing drunk...
- trying to play while drinking
-Not buying a better quality bass when i first started...
-almost knocked guitarists, drummers and singers out with my headstock.
-decided to try and tap an entire song with just my right hand because my left hand cramped up...
- perving on the female drummer in a band i was filling in for...and getting caught...
- Not learning to sight read as good as i should be able to...
- being a brand junkie for a long time...

i have more but still doesn't top some of the earlier ones! haha.

-not taking bass lessons earlier

-not being able to read that well

-when i finally had my dad to buy me my first bass, i refused a mia jazz bass for a korean soundgear from ibanez. i just said i didn't liked the fender!

that was about 12 years ago, i still do not have a jazz bass after this time :(
