STV replacement!

Street price is more then $1000 less then the damp leg. And lots of product is just slightly changed versions of popular stuff. that is how we got Marshall, Ibanez, SX, how many companies make copys of fender amps right down to the tweed covering? no one seems to to mind that. How about Jazz basses ?

But my ampeg is built like a tank. Its probably drank as much beer as i have and it still works. Something about really high voltages makes me want the best possible parts. Every product i have seen from "B" is always built like a child's toy from McDonald's.

I'd be damn near insane B4 I grabbed one of these, & I don't care for their 'dam-leg' type blatant advertising etc... That stinks! BUT....

A hire co. in my town has had a Behr. 300w gold fronted bass head for about 7 yrs now-or from whenever they came out- & it's been used & abused for every one of those yrs. Still goes & sounds OK really.
I KNOW it aint a BUGGERA all tube thing, but same co. etc.. so SOME of their stuff actually works & lasts.
So for SOMEONE, not me...... this MAY be an option. As I said earlier tho, IMO a
2nd hand damp-leg would be a FAR better choice!

The ad said it uses two pairs of 6550's, which are also known as KT88's. Problem is, I thought KT88's and 6550's were different tubes, am I wrong?

No you are not. One can be used to replace the other but the amp will have to be re-biased. 6550 is a beam tetrode while the KT88 is a kinkless tetrode. That said, what Sam opined is probably true. There has been a lot of blurring between the two types in recent years.

That's just because they're new.
Once they actually ship in the US and Canada - the prices will drop more. I don't believe their FCC excuse for not shipping to the US. I think there's something else going on.

I wonder to where they are on the "tube rotation" from their suppliers

Every manufacturer advertises they get a shipment of tubes or other components, test them, and keep the top ones for their own use and ship the rest back. Wonder if they're first, second, or somewhere farther down this rotation ...

Somehow - every tube manufactured ends up on the market no matter who rejects it.

i will never figure out how uli behringer sleeps at night. true, he's not killing people, but the blatant thievery makes me absolutely sick.

Why? People have been copying designs across all industries for decades. It's just a business model. Doesn't affect any of us that would care enough anyway. We know it's not the same stuff, just like we know SX isn't Fender.

EDIT: You know, this garbage is probably good for everyone. It forces Ampeg to stay on its toes and provide quality for those willing to pay more. Without any stiff competition, they'd eventually just cheapen everything, right? This might just be capitalism doing some good.
