So a few weeks ago I was contacted about covering a gig for a friend of a friend. Bass player quit and it was the drummers birthday. Figured I’d pick up some easy spare cash so I said sure.

Last week I get the set list, which wasn’t bad. Then I get an addendum which added 20 new songs. Not great but still, thanks to YouTube playlists was able to learn the material.

So I get to the gig to see on the marquee...

“I Don’t Know Jam”

Called up the BL who assured me that yes, this was the gig and no, it wasn’t a jam night. Also the 8 o’clock start time was shifted to 9 to accommodate the venue.

Played 4 songs and I notice people filing in with cases. Yes it ended up becoming a jam night. I stayed for a bit but really not my scene (because why would anyone want to use the house rig when my rig with double the power was there running right next to it). I’ve ended up replacing speakers most Jam nights (because why GAF about blowing gear that isn’t yours) so that being the main reason (plus visitation weekend), I decided to leave.

Also the C note promised ended up becoming $20 due to the fact that it was Jam night had a little to do with it.

Pics upcoming in a later post.

That is a hose job for sure.

I hate "jam nights." I know there's been alot of comments on here about how some people can only play songs and not jam. Well, that's me. In my experience, a "jam" night usually equates to a few cool guys that are fun and one douche nozzle who's sole purpose is to show up everyone else. I don't do it so jam nights are a big weakness for me.

But $100 turns to $20? That's a real shafting you got there.

If everyone was up front about the situation, I'd probably take $20 for playing 4 songs at a fun jam night with my friends. But there's no way I'm providing backline, or learning 20 songs. You got screwed, the situation was not what you were promised, my condolences. :(

Post script to this. Received a notification from Bandmix that I have a message from the person who contacted me about the gig, asking if I would be willing to do their jam night in a few weeks.

Yeah, not going to respond back.

Quote him $200 and send a sub who actually likes those kind of gigs. Pocket half the $200.

tell him you'll do it if you get the rest of the hundy from the last time and he provides a backline. And another Benjamin. In advance.

if its was on BandMix they should be notified and the dead beat should be ostracized, humilizid and then publicized.

I had one of those situations where there were 5 bands for a benefit show and each band would play 45 mins and bring their own rigs. I played next to the last band and their bass player asked to use my bass amp. They drove down from NY and didn't bring any amps? I don't mind a pro using my rig but what if I said no, It's 1am and I have to go home.
