Summer Build Off 2022 - Get Ready!

Sorry, it only takes one beer to make me stupid these days.
I'm going to start my preparation for the WBO on October 9th with a feast. How appropriate that it's a Sunday this year.
My goal for the SBO is to finish my WBO project.
Aw jeez too late, you're already in the spreadsheet. Real sorry aboot that, eh?

Hope so! This thread from this morning made me nervous - Please help me "read" this piece of (neck)wood
I really have no idea what to look for in wood and don't have someone more knowledgable I can bring to the store with me. But it was $50 Canadian for that piece, so even if it ended up being a bad purchase it's not the end of the world. Cheaper than I was expecting for something nice anyway.
Didn't buy any body wood today. I was going to go pine because it's so cheap and easily available that I don't need to stress over messing up. But then I had second thoughts at the store. I'm spending so much time thinking "this would be okay to mess up" instead of "this might end up playable" - and if it does, then I'd have a pine body. I don't know how much a thick finish would help, but I do know you can pretty much just push a dent into pine, which is less than ideal.
So back to the mental drawing board. For what they had in stock at the store, I couldn't get a body (besides pine) for under about $100, which is too much for me.
Well, he had good red oak, but that would be crazy heavy eh?

Oh yeah, good point, I wasn’t looking at the grain patterns in it. That one probably needs to be multi-lam, which is a good idea with any board. So you might only get two necks out of it, or perhaps three if you use a different (contrasting) piece of wood for some of the laminations.
For @Beej, before this build-off starts I have a suggestion for the theme of the next Winter one:
Reinterpreting a Classic Design
The builder is urged to find some familiar feature of a classic bass design and "improve" it or do some kind of variation of it. This leaves a lot of room for creativity, but it connects the projects to something familiar.
For example a short scale P-bass-ish instrument would qualify, or a Rick-like bass with a piezo/Stingray pickup combination, or a bass that refers to the Rick wave shape but changes/personalizes it, or a jazz-like bass that's in thinline form (i.e. chambered with a f-hole).
In other words making something new inspired by, or improving upon, something old.
Why bring it up now? Because your eager participants for the Summer Build-Off will see this and might be inspired to say "Terrible idea Beej, don't do it" or "Great idea, let's have it," or possibly "Meh." And thus you'll see if it would fly.
Or maybe this suggestion would make you think "That's okay but it gives me a better idea." HTH

I was hoping for a glitter and sequins theme.
Dad lost a branch off one of his Black Walnuts in a storm Friday morning. I'm 5'11", and my fingertips only go little better than half-way around the trunk when I hug it. I wonder what that looks like on the inside?...

Can I still enter the build-off of I go cut my padauk into 1" strips, or will I be tarred, feathered, spit on, banished, and all sorts of other nasty business?

So the walnut I went and got the other day is not solid. I guess this is punky? I might try to salvage some of the darker bits for small pieces, but the rest is
basically trash.
