Are you going to cut some finger joints to bring in other pieces on the ends?

Very good question and I’ve been thinking about it but I won’t.

My goal is to leave this old wood as is as much as possible so if they were finger jointed, then I would have left them that way.

So for me it’s gonna be butt joined and I will put some little wood dowels in the holes of the nails to locate my parts when gluing and will paint them black to fake the look of the nails.

I also want to make sure I have this brown ish/aged look of the wood because when I cut it, it’s very beige instead of brown and I don’t want to see this.

This old crate obviously survived many liquor spillages on it giving it that dark color I really like and fits perfectly with my dark roasted maple neck………………but those spillages come with a smell ! Hopefully, my 6 layers of Tru Oil will eliminate that smell !

Anyway, I have two questions for the experts if I may ask :

-1 : Humidity here in Montreal is 70% at the moment so how long should I leave the top pieces clamped with the body to make sure my standard yelowish wood glue cures ?

-2 : My top wood not being perfect, I have some random gaps of 1/16" at a few spots on the edge so would it be a good idea to fill those cracks with a syringe of two parts fast cure epoxy ?
