Double Bass Super cardioid and pattern 8 mics for live performances

I've been curious about the AEA n22 for live double bass. It's active so has its own boost built in, and is made for close micing, so the proximity effect might not be too boomy. Seems like it might function like a more sophisticated version of the troll mic

I'll wait and see what you think about the aea mic before I make my mind but are there no other competitors? Will you use a ribbon specific preamp or what is your idea? According to aea,any quality preamp will work but their own ribbon preamps will give the best results. That's one more 1.000dollars however... 1

The active amp makes the output and impedance same as a typical condenser so any good pre will work. I use Grace, Millennia and Merging Horus for my active AEAs.

It is better. Also consider the passive R92. It is leaner and has least proximiy effect of the AEA. Quite reasonsbly priced, but needs a quiet pre like a Grace.

By all accounts, the Troll is a very good microphone and was designed specifically as a Double Bass performance microphone.
The posted examples of Troll in it's original TB thread sounded very good. Hopefully, someone will post a comparison between
the Troll and the AEA KU5A. If I'm reading the specs. correctly, the KU5A is heavier than the Troll.

Would also love to hear about the KU5A, experiences both live and in the studio. Especially if someone has had the chance to try both that and the Schoeps MK41!
