Supertramp - Cannonball technique

I'm trying to play the song Cannonball from Supertramp. The main riff is a slap kind of sound, but I don't think it's slapping. But finger style sounds too muted. Can anyone tell me what the bass player (I guess Dougie Thomson) is doing there?

I think it may be a keyboard synth doubling the bass. If I had to approximate the tone for a cover gig I'd probably just use a pick.

It looks like he's playing with a Pick, in the video - see 0:12. Sounds like it, as well. (IMO)
