I have used the search function and did not get any hits regarding the newly announced Supro Huntington serie of basses. Huntington Bass – Supro Doug Wimbish does a fantastic demonstration of the capabilities of the bass. I think I need to find a better paying job so I can buy all the cool gear coming out from everywhere these days!
Hey everyone, Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm the artist relations and social media guy for Supro (and Pigtronix). I'm also an active professional bassist working in Toronto. I used to spend a lot of time on here back when I worked for Markbass. I still get messages from people here about Markbass! But I stopped working for them at the end of 2012. I started working for Supro in 2013 and have been mostly "talking guitar" since then... but now I get to talk with BASS players again since we're introducing the Huntington bass in about a month! Anyways, just wanted to say hello--and if any of you have any questions about the Huntington I will be happy to help however I can! Cheers, Peter
What's the scale length? I owned a Pocket Bass from the 60s and it was only a 25" scale! Those new models are very much unlike the old ones. Totally different pickups, different bridge, different body construction (the originals were hollow). Not a lot of spec information on that web page.
Hi Peter Murray, I'm not usually a "short scale" kind of guy-- but I have to admit, these actually intrigue me! Are these pickups like the single-coil pole-less, blade-less Valco gold foil pickups with the circular magnetic field? Any interest at Supro for developing a bass version of the VistaTone single coil (with either 4 large poles or 8 smaller ones)? Regarding guitar amps, I'm definitely glad to see Supro back! While my current Traynor amp satisfies my appetite for a Fender-like 12" Class AB combo, I'm totally considering a Dual-Tone or Black Magic for that "raunchy" Valco sound! Supro/Oahu/Airline amps were a definite part of the blues and early Rock-and-Roll landscape, and has been a "missing food group" in today's amp market for a long time!
Interesting bass. Doug Wimbish does some highly entertaining stuff after about 1:25 on this video. Not the kind of thing I'd be inclined to play. Not the kind of thing I'd normally even listen to. BUT, it's so good and "out there" that it kept a smile on my face through the whole thing. That ring modulator (I'm assuming that's what it is) I've found in the past is pretty hard to get anything musical out of. Wimbish does a pretty good job of it though! Some of that is just wild-n-crazy funny. The faces help. And that G-string de-tune (in conjunction with the faces) is just plain classic.
Hi, Reanimating the corpse of this thread because I've been listening to some online demos of the Supro Huntington. Peter -- I'd be helpful to me, and I suspect plenty of other TB members, if you could post the specs of the Huntington in this thread. I've looked at the Supro website and listened to the demos, but can't find much basic info about them. The local dealers on your site do not have any in stock, either. So: They are 30" scale, but what's the width at the nut? Can you describe the neck for us? It looks pretty beefy in photos. Where are the basses/pickups made? Are the piezo-equipped models still passive? From the demos it seems like some basses ship with flats and others with rounds -- can you break this down for us? And can you tell us your opinions about the difference in sound/tone between the one, two, and three pickup models? The Huntington seems really interesting and possibly quite unique. I've got a 6-string with modern versions of Supro pickups made by Roadhouse, and am a big fan. But it's hard to get too excited without access to fundamental information about the instrument's dimensions, neck style, the country of origin, etc. Any details you can provide would be appreciated.
Out of curiosity…are there any demos up of people actually playing some basslines on these things and not just slapping or generally having a blast (for themselves) screwing around on them? Kinda hard for me to work up much purchase enthusiasm after that Wimbish vid even though I am a big fan of short-scale basses.
I was thinking the same thing. I've seen some more straight-forward videos of the one and two pickup models. I'm definitely intrigued by the two-pickup model, and currently in the market for my first short scale, and I think the Huntington is in my top three. @Peter Murray , is there a confirmed release date yet?
So the Supro guy offered to answer questions about this bass back in July, then never replied to any of the questions? I gotta say that doesn't exactly inspire my confidence. Cool looking basses though.
That's why I actually tagged him in my post just now. Hopefully that gets his attention. Eh @Peter Murray ?!
